Reattachment Theory

In Reattachment Theory Lee Wallace argues that homosexuality—far from being the threat to “traditional” marriage that same-sex marriage opponents have asserted—is so integral to its reimagining that all marriage is gay marriage. Drawing on the history of marriage, Stanley Cavell's analysis of Hollywood comedies of remarriage, and readings of recent gay and lesbian films, Wallace shows that queer experiments in domesticity have reshaped the affective and erotic horizons of heterosexual marriage and its defining principles: fidelity, exclusivity, and endurance. Wallace analyzes a series of films—Dorothy Arzner's Craig's Wife (1936); Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009); Lisa Cholodenko's High Art (1998), Laurel Canyon (2002), and The Kids Are All Right (2010); and Andrew Haigh's Weekend (2011) and 45 Years (2015)—that, she contends, do not simply reflect social and legal changes; they fundamentally alter our sense of what sexual attachment involves as both a social and a romantic form.

From the bachelor pad that Jack Lemmon's C. C. Baxter loans out to his superiors in Billy Wilder's The Apartment (1960) to the crumbling tenement in a dystopian Taipei in Tsai Ming-liang's The Hole (1998), the apartment in films and television series is often more than just a setting: it can motivate or shape the narrative in key ways. Such works belong to a critical genre identified by Pamela Robertson Wojcik as the apartment plot, which comprises specific thematic, visual, and narrative conventions that explore modern urbanism's various forms and possibilities. In The Apartment Complex a diverse group of international scholars discuss the apartment plot in a global context, examining films made both within and beyond the Hollywood studios. The contributors consider the apartment plot's intersections with film noir, horror, comedy, and the musical, addressing how different national or historical contexts modify the apartment plot and how the genre's framework allows us to rethink the work of auteurs and identify productive connections and tensions between otherwise disparate texts. These Proceedings contain a selection of the lectures given at the conference BAIL 2008: Boundary and Interior Layers – Computational and Asymptotic Methods, which was held from 28th July to 1st August 2008 at the University of Limerick, Ireland. The ?rst three BAIL conferences (1980, 1982, 1984) were organised by Professor John Miller in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. The next seven were held in Novosibirsk (1986), Shanghai (1988), Colorado (1992), Beijing (1994), Perth (2002),Toulouse(2004),and Got ̈ tingen(2006).With BAIL 2008the series returned to Ireland. BAIL 2010 is planned for Zaragoza. The BAIL conferences strive to bring together mathematicians and engineers whose research involves layer phenomena,as these two groups often pursue largely independent paths. BAIL 2008, at which both communities were well represented, succeeded in this regard. The lectures given were evenly divided between app- cations and theory, exposing all conference participants to a broad spectrum of research into problems exhibiting solutions with layers. The Proceedings give a good overview of current research into the theory, app- cation and solution (by both numerical and asymptotic methods) of problems that involve boundaryand interior layers. In addition to invited and contributed lectures, the conference included four mini-symposia devoted to stabilized ?nite element methods, asymptotic scaling of wall-bounded ?ows, systems of singularly p- turbed differential equations, and problems with industrial applications (supported by MACSI, the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry). These titles exemplify the mix of interests among the participants.

The contributors to Long Term use the tension between the popular embrace and legalization of same-sex marriage and the queer critique of homonormativity as an opportunity to examine the myriad forms of queer commitments and their durational aspect. They consider commitment in all its guises, particularly relationships beyond and aside from monogamous partnering. These include chosen and involuntary long-term commitments to families, friends, pets, and coworkers; to the care of others and care of self; and to financial, psychiatric, and carceral institutions. Whether considering the enduring challenges of chronic illnesses and disability, including HIV and chronic fatigue syndrome; theorizing the queer family as a scene of racialized commitment; or relating the grief and loss that comes with caring for pets, the contributors demonstrate that attending to the long term offers a fuller understanding of queer engagements with intimacy, mortality, change, dependence, and care.
