Every aspect of the growing field has been addressed with coverage spanning recent technological development, new species, recent changes and global trends. More specifically, you will find information on the culture of species such as barramundi, cobia, dolphin fish, spiny lobsters, slipper lobsters, mud crabs, penaeid prawns, Nile tilapia, yellow king fish, abalone, sea cucumber and sea urchin, seaweed, ornamentals and Indian major carps, fugu, mud skippers, cephalopods and blue fin tuna. The technological innovations and introduction of new species into aquaculture are critical to the evolution of the global aquaculture industry; an industry which is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing in the world, having experienced huge advances across its many and diverse facets. Recent Advances and New Species in Aquaculture focuses explicitly on the ever-changing face of aquaculture, providing core scientific and commercially useful information on the remarkable growth in aquaculture production and in the advancement of new technological tools. Written by many well respected international figures and drawn together and edited by Ravi Fotedar & Bruce Phillips, this exciting book is an essential purchase for anyone involved in or about to enter into the aquaculture industry. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where aquaculture, fish biology, aquatic and environmental sciences and fisheries are studied and taught will find this an important addition to their shelves. Recent Advances and New Species in Aquaculture is sure to become a key companion for all those studying aquaculture and a valuable source of reference for all personnel involved in the industry.

The success of the previous volumes in this series attests to the buoyancy of the current expansion of the aquaculture industry, and the importance which it is beginning to achieve in the rural economies of many developed countries as well as those less favoured. In the last volume, emphasis was given to certain specialist areas which had become more important as the industry had acquired a more sophisti cated scientific base. This emphasis is continued, but in each of the chapters of the present volume there are, we believe, many data of general significance to the farmer and the project manager as well as to the pro fessional aquaculture scientist. David Alderman, of the English Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Laboratories, at Weymouth, Dorset, provides a very detailed and deeply researched review of therapy of fish diseases. This subject is import ant in environmental and human health terms as well as in relation to the fish themselves, and is an area where all farmers, and their professional veterinary advisers, require considerable knowledge if they are to ensure the reputation of the industry and its produce.

Closed life-cycle breeding of aquaculture species is essential for sustainability. The primary bottleneck towards this goal is a robust commercial-scale hatchery technology. The larval phase of Palinurid lobsters is amongst the lengthiest of any marine invertebrates; hence a major leap forward in aquaculture hatchery technology is required for commercial-scale production. The main challenges for Palinurid hatchery technology development are outlined together including aspects of water quality and tank design. The larval biology of Palinurid lobsters is discussed as well as broodstock husbandry and spawning. A concise review of reported diseases is presented together with larval nutrition requirements and their relationship to final larval metamorphosis to juvenile.

Recent Advances in Aquaculture V is a structured collection of specialist research reports that present an international perspective on the developing field of aquaculture. As in previous volumes, contributions examine the most recent advances and developments in both the scientific and production-based areas of the industry. However, Volume V provides greater emphasis on some of the wider issues, including water resources and socio-economic concerns. This reflects a growing awareness among planners, development agencies and industry leaders that aquaculture needs to be reviewed in its broadest context to ensure that development along productive and sustainable paths is not achieved at the cost of social dislocation and environmental damage. Although there is increased focus on Africa and Asia, Volume V offers balanced regional coverage reflecting the continuing theme in aquaculture that problems and solutions particular to one location or species will often be translocated elsewhere.

The world keeps changing. There are always risks associated with change. To make careful risk assessment it is always needed to re-evaluate the information according to new findings in research. Scientific knowledge is essential in determining the strategy for fish farming. This information should be updated and brought into line with the required conditions of the farm. Therefore, books are one of the indispensable tools for following the results in research and sources to draw information from. The chapters in this book include photos and figures based on scientific literature. Each section is labeled with references for readers to understand, figures, tables and text. Another advantage of the book is the "systematic writing" style of each chapter. There are several existing scientific volumes that focus specially on fish farms. The book consists of twelve distinct chapters. A wide variety of scientists, researchers and other will benefit from this book.

This book is an important addition to the knowledge of lobster research. The book complements other books published on lobster research and management as it focuses on Indian lobster fisheries and aquaculture developments where there have been nearly 350 research papers and reports and 19 PhD awards. The book has 15 chapters written by international experts covering many aspects of the biology of a number of spiny and slipper lobster species occurring in India and world oceans with maps illustrating global distribution of spiny lobster families, genera and species. An updated taxonomy and checklist of marine lobsters, the status and management of lobster fisheries in India and Indian Ocean Rim countries and a review of aquaculture research in India and other major countries have also been presented. The book is timely as the 2nd International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) is currently underway (2015-2020), 50 years after the original IIOE (1959-1965), with some of the original lobster research on the biology and distribution of phyllosoma larvae being undertaken on the plankton samples collected during the first IIOE. Many of the chapters are contributed by the authors from Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), which has been collecting fishery and biological data on lobsters since 1950 when lobster fishing began on a subsistence scale, followed by some industrial fishing for lobsters in different parts of India. Unfortunately, the development of some of these lobster fisheries was followed by overfishing due to lack of enforcement of regulations. The book provides a valuable addition to our knowledge of the biology, fisheries and aquaculture of spiny and slipper lobsters.

It is a tribute to the vigour of research and development in aquaculture that we are able, in a relatively short time, to provide readers with a second volume in this series, which has such a diversity of high calibre research and developments to report. That the first volume was so well received has been a source of great satisfaction to the editors and supported their conviction as to the need for links to join the research laboratory to the fish farm by making current research available to a wider range of potential users.
