Reconstruction Of The Paleo Asian Ocean

This Proceedings volume contains selected papers from two symposia which were held during the 29th International Geological Congress, Kyoto, Japan, 24 August--3 September, 1992. The first symposium --- ''Reconstruction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean'' --- contains 11 papers from a group of scientists working together in an international project of the same name. The goal of the project is to collect and evaluate petrologic and tectonic data within specific terranes so as to understand the geodynamic processes leading to the amalgamation of Asia. These papers represent vital geological discussions for interpreting the geodynamic maps being produced by the project. From the second symposium of this volume --- ''Quaternary Environmental Change'' --- 14 papers were selected. The wide range of topics can be divided as follows: Deep sea core analysis; Coral reef and nearshore environment; Paleoenvironmental analysis; Tephras, Loess and Pedology; River morphology and others.

This volume provides accounts of up-to-date research by Chinese and international geological teams on key aspects of the tectonic evolution of China and its surrounding areas. The papers describe the formation of the geological terranes that make up this part of east Asia, place constraints on plate tectonic models for their assembly and provide accounts of unique geological feature of the subcontinent.

The 1st International Congress on Stratigraphy (STRATI 2013), hold in Lisbon, 1–7 July 2013, follows the decision to internationalize the conferences previously organized by the French Committee of Stratigraphy (STRATI), the last one of which was held in Paris in 2010. Thus, the congress possesses both the momentum gained from an established conference event and the excitement of being the first International Congress on Stratigraphy. It is held under the auspices of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (IUGS) and it is envisaged that this first congress will lead to others being held in the future. This book includes all papers accepted for oral or poster presentation at the 1st International Congress on Stratigraphy. Papers include a short abstract, main text, figures, tables and references. Each paper has been reviewed by two internationally renowned scientists.

Hendrix (geology, U. of Montana) and Davis (earth sciences, U. of Southern California) present 19 articles detailing ground-based work on the history of assembly and intracontinental deformation of central and eastern Asia. Chapters look at the structural, thermochronologic, and sedimentary records of the history of Paleozoic assembly in Mongolia and central and western China. Further information is presented on Mesozoic deformation in orogenic belts of central and eastern Asia. Asia's sedimentary basins are examined and the intracontinental deformation they record is documented. This Proceedings volume contains 14 papers from the symposium ''Siliceous, Phosphatic and Glauconitic Sediments of the Tertiary and Mesozoic'', which was held during the 29th International Geological Congress, Kyoto, Japan, 24 August--3 September, 1992. The first part of this volume consists of papers dealing with Tertiary biosiliceous sediments of the Pacific Rim, starting in the northwest. The second part of the volume is composed of papers dealing with Tertiary and Mesozoic phosphatic rocks and phosphatebearing sequences, in particular of the eastern Pacific Rim and the Middle East. The articles serve to emphasize the similarities and differences between the Pacific Neogene successions and the Tethyan Mesozoic sequences of the Middle East.

This volume is an extended Proceedings of the ''Ophiolite Symposium'' which was held during the 29th International Geological Congress, Kyoto, Japan, 24 August--3 September, 1992. If focuses on the multiplicity and diversity of the circum-Pacific Phanerozoic ophiolites and their intra-continental analogues. An introductory paper, summarizing characteristics of the circum-Pacific ophiolites is followed by papers dealing with particular segments of circum-Pacific ophiolite belts arranged in a counter-clockwise direction from New Zealand to Japan. These are followed by comprehensive documentations on multiple ophiolite belts within the Asian continent, as well as by a paper on a Tethyan ophiolite in Iran. Additionally, a report and a general view on the Late Proterozoic ophiolites are included.

"Inspired by a GSA Penrose Conference held in 2005 (cosponsored by the International Association of Sedimentologists and the British Sedimentological Research Group), the 17 papers in this volume explore sedimentary environments in arc collision zones and their utility in recording the evolution of modern and ancient convergent margins. The first set of papers in the collection focuses on formation and evolution of the sedimentary record in arc settings and arc collision zones, concentrating on modern intra-oceanic examples. Papers include studies of flexural modeling and factors that affect development of siliciclastic and carbonate deposits around modern arcs. The second half of the volume presents new applications of arc sedimentary records. These relate primarily to constraining tectonic events in the evolution of arc systems, but also concern the links among tectonic uplift, collision, and geomorphic and climatic feedback mechanisms in arc collision zones."--Publisher's website.
