The Boston Red Sox have blown hot and cold over the decades. These lists of Top 5s and 10s cover both the highs and lows of a team that has endured a long history of both joy and sorrow. They won the first World Series ever played and then five more pennants in the next fifteen years. Famously, from 1918 until the magical year of 2004, the Sox endured eighty-six seasons without a championship, although they lost pennants and world championships on the last possible day more times than fans care to remember. Finally, in 2004, they won it all. Loyal fans will always remember the joy of Mo Vaughn's grand slam on opening day in 1998 and will likely never forget the agony of Game 6 in 1986. Through it all, unforgettable names like Buckner, Yaz, Tony C. and Big Papi still resonate in the shadows of Fenway Park. From the greatest pitchers to the worst opening days, author Bill Nowlin recounts the highs and lows of Boston's most celebrated sports franchise.

The Ecstasy & Agony of Being a Red Sox Fan describes the highs and lows, the fulfillment and disappointment, and the gratification and frustration of following the Boston Red Sox for more than seven decades - as a child, a teenager, an adult, and a senior. Reading it may help explain the peculiar paranoia that permeates the psyche of Red Sox fans. The situations and events that are based on my personal experiences - being at a game, watching it on television, listening to it on the radio, or interacting with an involved individual - are narratives that are uncolored by the opinions or partiality of anyone else. But many incidents are based on information, statistics and data obtained, reported and compiled by the media - by writers, analysts, and broadcasters who presumably had the access - that I did not, nor did any fan - to the inner workings of the Red Sox, i.e. what transpired in the clubhouse or front office, or between management and players, or between players. The attitudes and beliefs of sports fans about a team are, to a great extent, shaped by people who presumably are objective in their reporting and have greater knowledge of the team than its fans do. As I wrote The Ecstasy & Agony of Being a Red Sox Fan I came to realize just how dependent I was, as is every fan, on information provided by the media. I also decided that some in the media often are not objective and/or have incomplete information, but that's the way it is. Cum grano salis is the Latin expression for taking something with a grain of salt. It's sometimes appropriate when reading sportswriters' reports. But whatever the source of a fan's perspective or whether or not it is justified, he or she is entitled to it. That's what being a fan is all about. So my descriptions, opinions and beliefs may or may not be complete or completely accurate. But they are mine. All the personal events are from my memory - from just a little while ago to nearly three-quarters of a century past. Some of them were blurred and snapped into focus by research. Some of them were always clearly etched. Some Red Sox games I recall as if they were played yesterday. Others were only vague memories that were stimulated by more research. Some dialog is re-created. Some of it is approximate. Some of it is word for word. But it is what I remember. An emotional roller coaster of memories that describes the Ecstasy and Agony of being a Red Sox fan.

Shandygaff is about the life and adventures of newspaper editor Kenneth Stockton. Excerpt: "SHANDYGAFF: a very refreshing drink, being a mixture of bitter ale or beer and ginger-beer, commonly drunk by the lower classes in England, and by strolling tinkers, low church parsons, newspaper men, journalists, and prizefighters. Said to have been invented by Henry VIII as a solace for his matrimonial difficulties. It is believed that a continual bibbing of shandygaff saps the will, the nerves, the resolution, and the finer faculties, but some will abide no other tipple."

Preeminent psychologist Lisa Barrett lays out how the brain constructs emotions in a way that could revolutionize psychology, health care, the legal system, and our understanding of the human mind. “Fascinating . . . A thought-provoking journey into emotion science.”—The Wall Street Journal “A singular book, remarkable for the freshness of its ideas and the boldness and clarity with which they are presented.”—Scientific American “A brilliant and original book on the science of emotion, by the deepest thinker about this topic since Darwin.”—Daniel Gilbert, best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture. A lucid report from the cutting edge of emotion science, How Emotions Are Made reveals the profound real-world consequences of this breakthrough for everything from neuroscience and medicine to the legal system and even national security, laying bare the immense implications of our latest and most intimate scientific revolution.

The Rock History Reader is an eclectic compilation of readings that tells the history of rock as it has been received and explained as a social and musical practice throughout its six decade history. The readings range from the vivid autobiographical accounts of such rock icons as Ronnie Spector and David Lee Roth to the writings of noted rock critics like Lester Bangs and Chuck Klosterman. It also includes a variety of selections from media critics, musicologists, fanzine writers, legal experts, sociologists and prominent political figures. Many entries also deal specifically with distinctive styles such as Motown, punk, disco, grunge, rap and indie rock. Each entry includes headnotes, which place it in its historical context. This second edition includes new readings on the early years of rhythm & blues and rock ‘n’ roll, as well as entries on payola, mods, the rise of FM rock, progressive rock and the PMRC congressional hearings. In addition, there is a wealth of new material on the 2000s that explores such relatively recent developments as emo, mash ups, the explosion of internet culture and new media, and iconic figures like Radiohead and Lady Gaga. With numerous readings that delve into the often explosive issues surrounding censorship, copyright, race relations, feminism, youth subcultures, and the meaning of musical value, The Rock History Reader continues to appeal to scholars and students from a variety of disciplines.

Norms of Word Association contains a heterogeneous collection of word association norms. This book brings together nine sets of association norms that were collected independently at different times during a 15-year period. Each chapter is a self-contained unit. The order in which the norms are presented is arbitrary, although an attempt is made to group together norms that seem to belong together. The 1952 Minnesota norms are presented first, due to "age" and in recognition of the fact that a number of the norms that follow are direct outgrowths of this work. The next three norms in this collection are responses to the Russell-Jenkins stimuli obtained from subjects representing different linguistic communities. A summary of association norms collected from British and Australian subjects are reported along with association norms from German and French college students and French workmen. Four sets of norms that are not directly related to the 1952 Minnesota collection are included. The text will be of interest to historians and researchers in the field of verbal learning and verbal behavior.
