Cascaded power conversion systems with a bulky DC link are used in most electric traction applications, industrial motor drives, renewable energy systems, uninterruptible power supplies, etc. The voltage across this intermediate DC link is typically maintained at a nearly constant level and is a critical prerequisite to using the classical pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques to obtain the desired power conversion with adequate fidelity. In other words, the dc bus voltage is assumed to be stiff enough to provide decoupling between the source and load, allowing dynamic regulation functions to be implemented at the load and source terminals independently. In these cases, size of the dc bus capacitance is dictated by requirements of steady state ripple voltage, ripple current rating, ride-through considerations and more importantly, voltage overshoot during source and load transients. Hence, the dc link capacitor is sized to store enough energy to maintain several tens of cycles of ac output at the rated power. This large amount of energy storage at the DC link is realized by utilizing bulky electrolytic capacitors in the range of 100[lowercase mu]F-3000[lowercase mu]F which can occupy as much as 40-70% of the power converter volume. Design trade-offs in realizing a stable system with acceptable transient performance often place a lower bound in the value of dc bus capacitance. In this work, two modulation and control approaches are proposed for cascaded power converters, Zero Energy Modulation (ZEM) and Stored Energy Modulation (SEM). ZEM and SEM are primarily aimed to synthesize high quality waveforms, but without employing large energy storage. These robust controllers are based on integrated and coupled control at the intermediate dc link, source and load terminals. The switching intervals of the various solid state switching devices are determined in an integrated fashion and placed within each switching period in a particular sequence determined by the desired voltage and current waveforms, using an intelligent controller, such that the power conversion is achieved with high quality output waveforms but without large amounts of energy storage. ZEM permits zero units of energy storage at the dc link, with dc link capacitance of 1[lowercase mu]F against 100[lowercase mu]F-3000[lowercase mu]F required with conventional PWM. However, it is accompanied by high voltage stress across the dc link devices. SEM overcomes ZEM's drawback and employs2 units of energy storage at the dc link (H"0[lowercase mu]F). By using any of these approaches, the conventionally used bulky electrolytic capacitors can now be replaced with tiny film capacitors, thus paving the way for high-density power conversion. Further, these film capacitors have much higher shelf and service life with lower equivalent resistances, leading to reduced operating losses. The weight, volume, operating efficiencies and costs of the whole system can be significantly reduced.
