Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Missionary Bishop My dear wife preserved no little of memoranda of my life in the Rocky Mountains. Once and again she importuned me to gather it together into a connected recital. When in 1889 we had settled upon having a summer cottage on Lake Michigan, I yielded to her request and began these "Reminiscences." I could give to them only my summer vacations. Pressing duties of life allowed me no other time. I finished them in 1904. I have only two motives in printing them. First, to accede to the wishes of one dear to me, whose desire I want all the more to comply with since she has been taken from my side. Second, to pen an honest record out from a tenderly grateful heart of how kind and good and helpful to a brother man were those who were wrong in belief and those who were wild and wicked in conduct of the men whom he knew and loved "in the mountains." The Rev. G.D. B. Miller has added to his life of faithful help to me the great kindness of supervising the printing and publishing of this volume. Excerpt from Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West When he could barely walk, I took him to the cathedral one afternoon when I went back for something I had left: after morning service. I left him down in the nave by the door, while I walked up to the chancel. I was busied there for a few moments, and when I turned to go out, he had advanced half-way up the middle aisle, and was standing where the declining sun, streaming through the great painted west window, threw a golden light around his curly head. And a tiny little oh jcet he was in that great, quiet church. It was very still. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Reminiscences of a Texas Missionary In the month of. March, 1852, six Oblate Fathers and one Lay Brother, accompanied by four Nuns of the Incarnate Word, two Ursuline Sisters, four Brothers of Mary, and eighteen Seminarians, bade adieu to "La Belle France" and went aboard the sailing vessel "La Belle Assise," at Havre, en route for Texas. "My native land adieu! adieul I cannot always stay with you, stay with you." The wharf is crowded, thousands are there, in expectation of an unwonted spectacle. The saintly Bishop Odin, in his episcopal robes, blesses the band of missionaries from the pier and then goes back to Paris, in the interest of his diocese. The ship leaves its moorings, the cannon booms, the Ave Maris Stella is sung by thirty-five voices, "Adieu ma belle France." The sacrifice is made joyfully, "Hilarem datorem diligit Deus." Some sing, "Partons pour la Syrie." I saw tears trickling down the cheeks of a tender-hearted seminarian, as he cast a last glance on the coast of France disappearing on the horizon. "Adieu, mother." Fifty-two days between the immensity of the firmament and the immensity of the ocean taught us to appreciate the fixity of mother earth. Excerpt from An Apostle of the Western Church: Memoir of the Right Reverend Jackson Kemper First Missionary Bishop of the American Church, With Notices of Some of His Contemporaries; A Contribution to the Religious History of the Western States IN a note to his sketch of Jackson Kemper, in his Bishops of the American Church, Bishop Perry wrote His life is yet to be written. It will be the history of the founding of the Church in the middle West. No apology is necessary for a biography of Bishop Kemper; in fact, it is a reflection upon the church that she has not had one before. There is a certain vulgarity about a family, an institution or a nation that is ignorant of and indifferent to its past. Every church man old or young, but especially the young, and especially in the dioceses that have sprung out of Kemper's old juris diction, should be familiar with the facts in his career.
