England has a surprising number of timber-framed buildings, many dating back to pre 1700, which are listed buildings. There is now an increasing demand for these buildings to be adapted to suit modern day requirements. This book takes a practical approach and discusses materials and carpentry techniques used in the repair of these buildings, along with a qualitative account of the structural behaviour of the timber elements.

This report presents information on technical aspects of inspection, evaluation, reinforcement, repair, and rehabilitation of timber structures. Any structure, regardless of the material from which it is made, may be subject to a review of its ability to perform a specific function or functions. This report reviews factors that influence the serviceability of wood structures, including loadings, duration of loads, temperature, moisture and weathering. Effects of chemicals and fire, as well as insects, fungi, and other organisms that attack wood are also covered. Designing to avoid problems caused by these factors is discussed. Inspection techniques and equipment are described, along with guidelines on where to look and what to look for. A section of evaluation of wood structures includes criteria such as structural analysis, determination of loads, and estimating load carrying capacity.

By presenting the work of the RILEM Technical Committee 245-RTE, the book provides an overview of the existing techniques for the reinforcement of timber elements, joints and structures. It consists of two parts: part I examines state-of-the-art information on reinforcement techniques, summarizes the current status of standardization, and covers STS, GiR, FRP and nanotechnology. This new book begins with an extended introduction to timber as a building material: its various forms and properties, its response to environmental conditions, and the Building Regulations relating to its use. It goes on to follow the general sequence of work, starting with the commission, and then dealing with the survey, the investigation and the appraisal.
