This book is an annual research report on the cruise industry in China and throughout the world in 2021, contributed by Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology and Shanghai International Cruise Economic Research Center. This volume consists of four parts to discuss general and special topics on global and China’s cruise industry covering respond to COVID-19, cruise tourism market, public health emergency mechanism. It offers an all-rounded perspective and a strong foresight, as well as systematic studies on China's cruise industry in the context of routine COVID-19 control and the new dual circulation development pattern. And as 2021 marks the beginning of the 14th FYP period when various plans for the cruise industry were rolled out to chart the course and strategic paths toward development for the cruise industry, it focuses also on developments in China's cruise industry.

The book focuses more on the study of cruise economy industry chain based on the previous editions and the latest trend of China’s cruise economy. It includes the Special Topic: Cruise Economic Reform and Innovation in the New Era, explores Asia cruise economic prosperity index, China’s cruise economy whole-industry-chain strategy in the new era, and the development of cruise destinations in the context of the Yangtze River Delta integration. The volume provides a good reference for better promoting the high-quality development of China’s cruise market.

This book is an annual research report prepared by the cruise industry experts and scholars at home and abroad invited by Shanghai International Cruise Business Institute based on the current development situations of the international cruise industry, is an important part of the “X Book Series” of the Social Science Academic Press (China). This book consists of five parts, i.e., “General Report”, “Special Articles for High-quality Tourism: Common Value and Government Management”, “The Cruise Industry”, “Policy Suggestions” and “Appendix”, and it has richer and more perfect contents in comparison with the previous versions. Under the Book, the development environment of the cruise industry at home and abroad during 2017-2018 as well as the development situations, strategic paths and future trends is analyzed in the form of the General Report and the current development trend of the cruise industry in China is introduced based on the top ten hot topics. With the economic development trend from the high-speed growth to the high-quality development in China, the new topic “Special Articles for High-quality Tourism: Common Value and Government Management” is presented in the Book to discuss the quality development patterns and paths of the cruise tourism in China, the high-quality development mechanism of the cruise tourism as well as the cruise tourism market cultivation and standardization system, so as to better enhance the quality of the cruise market development in China. In Part 3 “The Cruise Industry” and Part 4 “Policy Suggestions” under the Book, the whole picture of the cruise economy in China in the new era is presented, problems during the industrial development are analyzed and corresponding policy suggestions are given.

The book contains 12 contributions that explain the current state of China’s cruise industry and future development. Dating from the 1960s and with the rapid development of over 50 years, the modern cruise industry has developed into one of the fastest growing industries with the most remarkable economic benefits in the global tourism and hospitality industry, known as a “golden industry on the golden waterway”. In recent years, with the gradual saturation of international cruise market and the eastward-moving trend of the center of cruise market, China has become a strategic emerging market with which international cruise lines have been competing. A number of international cruise lines, including Costa Crociere, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, Star Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Dream Cruises, have entered the cruise market in Mainland China.

The maritime industry plays an important role in international trade activities and the global economy. It is estimated that international shipping carries approximately 80% of global trade by volume and more than 70% by value. However, increasing maritime activities have had a negative impact on the marine environment and human health. For example, in November 2002, a tanker carrying 77000 tons of fuel oil sank in the Bay of Biscay, which polluted thousands of kilometers of Western European coasts, rivers, streams and swamps. Oil spills caused by ship accidents and other pollution associated with maritime activities have attracted considerable attention in the research community. A large number of studies on shipping pollution have been conducted across different disciplines. However, new challenges are emerging in maritime operation and management, leading to research questions related to intelligent technology and environmental protection, maritime pollution and governance, maritime accidents and environmental emergency.

The 2023 edition discusses the region’s economic outlook and macroeconomic challenges at a time of great uncertainty and a slowdown of the global economy, in particular owing to inflationary pressures, capital flow volatility and supply-side bottlenecks. The thematic chapters focus on reviving tourism after the pandemic.

This two-volume book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Multimedia Technology and Enhanced Learning, ICMTEL 2021, held in April 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The 97 revised full papers have been selected from 208 submissions. They describe new learning technologies which range from smart school, smart class and smart learning at home and which have been developed from new technologies such as machine learning, multimedia and Internet of Things.
