These proceedings include papers presented at the International Conference on “Research and Advanced Technology in Fire Safety” FireSafety 2017 which took place at University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain. During last decade, our research group organized several on-day events and, in this sense, the success of this conference is a tribute for that continued effort to exchange knowledge on this discipline between experts from all parts of the world. This congress represents an excellent “agora” for researchers and engineers to present and discuss new and innovative approaches. In addition, this event is a unique opportunity for Spanish-speaker scientific and technological community to receive them from top references. The need for expertise in this field is also increasing in this geographical context.

This book focuses on topics in the entire spectrum of fire safety science, targeting research in fires, explosions, combustion science, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, risk analysis, structural engineering, and other subjects. The book contributes to a gain in advanced scientific knowledge and presents or advances new ideas in all topics in fire safety science. Two decades ago, the 1st Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Science and Technology was held in Hefei, China. Since then, the Asia-Oceania Symposia have grown in size and quality. This book, reflecting that growth, helps readers to understand fire safety technology, design, and methodology in diverse areas including historical buildings, photovoltaic panels, batteries, and electric vehicles.

This book features selected papers from the 11th Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Science and Technology (AOSFST 2018), held in Taipei, Taiwan. The rapid development of China’s transportation system brings huge challenges to fire safety issues. Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in Chinaanalyzes key fire issues for large transportation systems in rail, airport, tunnels, etc. and offers solutions and best practices for similar projects throughout the world. The first monograph to look at transportation hub fire issues in China looks at architecture features, occupancy and area classification, fire hazard and design difficulties based on local code design.
