Researching Translation Competence By Pacte Group

This volume is a compendium of PACTE Group’s experimental research in Translation Competence since 1997. The book is organised in four main parts and also includes eight appendices and a glossary. Part I presents the conceptual and methodological framework of PACTE’s Translation Competence research design. Part II focuses on the methodological aspects of the research design and its development: exploratory tests and pilot studies carried out; experiment design; characteristics of the sample population; procedures of data collection and analysis. Part III presents the results obtained in the experiment related to: the Acceptability of the translations produced in the experiment and the six dependent variables of study (Knowledge of Translation; Translation Project; Identification and Solution of Translation Problems; Decision-making; Efficacy of the Translation Process; Use of Instrumental Resources); this part also includes a corpus analysis of the translations. Part IV analyses the translators who were ranked highest in the experiment and goes on to present final conclusions as well as PACTE’s perspectives in the field of Translation Competence research.

This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at an international conference on Translation Studies in Barcelona in 1998. The papers illustrate four areas that are of particular interest in translation research today in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The purpose of the first section, 'Investigating Translation Paradigms', is to reach a critical revision of existing paradigms and to develop new ones in approaching the translated text. The second section, 'Investigating the Translation Process', focuses on the skills, knowledge and strategies that make up translation competence. The third section, 'Investigating Translation and Ideology' addresses not only the 'invisible' influence of ideologies on the translator, but also the role of translators in transmitting ideology. The fourth section, 'Investigating Translation Receivers' envisages translators as communicators caught between the opposing trends of localisation and globalisation. This tension can be seen in the selection of the papers, some of which reflect on research carried out in recently established translation centres in Spain, while others discuss the latest work of scholars from long established centres in other countries.

This book offers a systematic and comprehensive account of translation competence (TC), reflecting on its different models and conceptualisations throughout its development and outlining future directions for both theory and practice. The volume charts the evolution of TC in line with related findings in empirical product- and process-oriented research. In critically examining the different models of translation competence, Quinci explores a wide range of connected issues of ongoing debate within Translation Studies, including translation quality, the revision process, and translator self-assessment. The second section of the book investigates these themes at work in the design, conduct, and results of an award-winning longitudinal research project which analysed the acquisition and development of TC in a sample group of translation trainees and professional translators. The volume builds on the outcomes of this project to offer practical activities for translator education, informed by theory and empirical research, toward encouraging continued reflection and new directions for translation competence research and practice. This book will be of interest to scholars in Translation Studies, as well as translation trainees and active translation professionals.

The articles which appear in this volume stem from papers presented in a sub-section of the II Brazilian International Translators' Forum dedicated to process-oriented research in translation. The congress's main theme, namely Translating the Millennium: Corpora, Cognition and Cultures is reflected in the seven contributions which aim at fostering the dialogue among translation researchers interested in process-oriented investigations. This book highlights one of the main axes, focusing on the interfaces between cognition and translation, and more precisely on the investigation of translation processes from three main vantage points: theoretical perspectives, empirical investigations and pedagogical applications.

The questions which this volume seeks to address include: what is translation competence? How can it be built and developed? How can the product of the performance be used to measure levels of competence? These questions are addressed with specific reference to the training situation. They are arranged in three sections, the first focusing on the identification of subcompetences.

This volume offers a wide array of cutting-edge original research on the implementation of Foreign Language Pedagogy in translator and interpreter training, a still rather unexplored field of research in Translation Studies. It is divided in two distinct sections. The first section focuses on theoretical approaches to this topic. The chapters of this section will offer the reader valuable new knowledge and thoughts on how to update and enrich academic curricula as well as how to make use of cognitive linguistics and to implement a multicultural approach in the demanding domain of translator and interpreter training. The second practical section comprises a series of diverse methods and didactical means of Foreign Language Pedagogy which are creatively adapted to fit in language and translation/interpreting teaching for translation/interpreting trainees, aiming at fostering their translational sub-competences. The volume’s overarching aim is to clearly emphasise that foreign language teaching for translation and interpreting trainees has to be approached and structured differently than conventional language teaching in other academic disciplines. It is useful for scholars and translation/interpreting teachers who want to enrich translator/interpreter training with new interdisciplinary ideas and knowledge which will significantly assist them in enhancing the translation/interpreting competence of their students.

This volume presents recent research that follows translators, interpreters and translation project managers into their various work contexts and environments. It extends the scope of analysis of translation research from individuals and texts to collectives in their social and material worlds. Particular attention is paid to current translation and interpreting practice, the genesis of translations, the handling and completion of translation projects in real workplaces and the factors that shape these translation/interpreting situations. Covering fields as diverse as technical and literary translation, transcreation and church interpreting, the chapters show just how varied translation and interpreting processes and workplaces can prove to be. They provide new insights into the effects of the increasing use of technology in the translation workplace and the manifold requirements placed on translators and interpreters in a heterogeneous and fast-changing field of practice.
