"The management of resources is a central duty for school and college leaders, but one for which they are often under-prepared. Good, contextual information and guidance are vital, especially as increased marketisation, international comparison and decentralised governance put additional pressure on leaders to manage their resources astutely. This second edition of Educational Resource Management: An International Perspective is an updated guide to all aspects of this key responsibility and how they are applied in today's real-world situations across the globe. Following a detailed overview of funding and resource management in public and private provision, the book looks at the criteria by which the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of the management of educational resources may be judged. It goes on to explore cost structures, budgets and the principles of asset management, all illustrated through case studies that draw on practitioner experiences and the authors' observations in a range of national contexts. Concluding with a review of current tensions in educational resource management and pointers towards further study, the book is a succinct yet comprehensive guide for school and college leaders. It will be essential reading for those studying the subject as part of Masters and Professional Doctorate qualifications."-- Provided by publisher.

Retrenchment and reallocation processes at five public colleges and universities were studied: the University of Washington; University of Idaho; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Michigan State University; and Seattle Community College District. After an overview of institutional approaches to retrenchment and reallocation, the five individual case studies highlight efforts by institutions under severe political, economic, and time pressure. The schools are located in three states that have been hit hardest by revenue shortfalls. Each case study includes an institutional profile, a chronology of events, and financial data. Factors that influence institutional responses of reallocation and retrenchment are covered, including the duration of the fiscal crisis, degree of management flexibility available to the institution, and diversification of institutional revenue sources. The following components of effective reallocation are described: faculty and constituent involvement in reallocation, assessment of institutional role and mission, quality of academic and support programs, and long-term versus short-term costs and benefits associated with reallocation. This book advances educational understanding and practice in Organisation Studies and Human Resource Management (OSHRM). It develops new theoretical perspectives on learning in OSHRM and introduces and evaluates a range of educational approaches, methods and techniques to advance teaching and assessment and student learning in the field. Chapters are evidence-based and provide practical advice for enhancing the effectiveness of OSHRM programmes and courses in universities, colleges and human resource development settings globally. With contributions from leading educators in OSHRM, the book both advances understanding and provides practical guidance for the design of programmes, courses and classes. Importantly, it illustrates innovative classroom and virtual learning experiences that will secure student engagement; cultivate critical and creative thinking; and enhance students’ employability, leadership and enterprise capabilities. A distinctive contribution of the book lies in the inclusion of student viewpoints on the understandings and educational advances proposed by the authors. Significantly, the book demonstrates how recent changes affecting higher education, such as globalisation, mass participation and marketisation, and, most recently, the pandemic crisis, can be embraced as opportunities to advance both educational understanding and educational policy and practice in OSHRM. This book will be invaluable for university educators internationally in the fields of OSHRM and for HR developers working in management and leadership development, and the book has relevance to both groups whatever their career stage, from absolute beginners through to advanced practitioners.
