Rethinking L1 Education In A Global Era

This book brings together a range of scholars from 10 different countries to address the contemporary state of play in national standard language education – i.e. the L1 subjects. It seeks to understand the field from within a comparative-historical and transnational frame. Four thematic threads are woven through the volume: educationalisation; globalisation; pluriculturalism; and technologization. The chapters range over various aspects of L1 as a school subject: literature, language and literacy; reading and writing; media and digital technology; the dialogue between curriculum inquiry and Didaktik studies; the continuing relevance of Bildung; the significance of history and nation; and new challenges of culture and environment in the face of climate change. The book concludes with a reflection on the prospects for L1 education today and tomorrow, in a now thoroughly globalised context and, accordingly, deeply implicated in a necessary new project of nation re-building.

Rapidly evolving digital technologies are reciprocally linked to the way people think, learn, generate knowledge, create, communicate, and collaborate in the digital age. These media-communicative and related sociocultural changes must be acknowledged in the educational context. The aim of the present study is, from a transnational perspective, to investigate experts’ anticipated L1 education futures in 2030 and teachers’ literacies deemed necessary in this context. The research aims are addressed through an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design reflected in the application of a three-round modified Delphi study. The panel is drawn from individuals who are considered experts at the intersection of (L1) education and digitalisation and are selected on their theoretical or applied expertise and their interest in the issue under investigation. It becomes clear that the experts emphasised the need for transformations regarding traditional structures, practices, and processes of teaching and learning by 2030, specifically given contemporary practices and forms of learning, thinking, and working in the digital age.

This book offers a critical and reflective discussion of contemporary challenges for education relating to sustainability and post-factual truths in light of the concepts of knowledge and Bildung. The book uses the concepts of knowledge and Bildung as keys to grasp what education is, and how the different educational traditions can complement a better understanding of challenges to education. Knowledge is taken as the core of the Anglo-American and French educational traditions, and Bildung is key for German and Nordic Didaktik traditions. The book presents comparative analytical work from international scholars who discuss Bildung aims in the light of sustainability, and knowledge in light of the ‘post-factual’ era. Building on the 2021 book Didaktik and Curriculum in Ongoing Dialogue, the book will be highly relevant for researchers, scholars and postgraduate students in the fields of educational theory, pedagogy, curriculum studies and comparative education.

This volume offers a critical overview of digital reading practices and scholarly efforts to analyze and understand reading in the mediatized landscape. Building on research about digital reading, born-digital literature, and digital audiobooks, The Digital Reading Condition explores reading as part of a broader cultural shift encompassing many forms of media and genres. Bringing together research from media and literary studies, digital humanities, scholarship on reading and learning, as well as sensory studies and research on multimodal and multisensory media reception, the authors address and challenge print-biased conceptions of reading that are still prevalent in research, whether the reading medium is print or digital. They argue that the act of reading itself is changing, and rather than rejecting digital media as unsuitable for sustained or focused reading practices, they argue that the complex media landscape challenges us to rethink how to define reading as a mediated practice. Presenting a truly interdisciplinary perspective on digital reading practices, this volume will appeal to scholars and graduate students in communication, media studies, new media and technology, literature, digital humanities, literacy studies, composition, and rhetoric.

This book contributes to the innovation of writing education and research globally by providing crucial insights into how the structures and aims of literacy curricula vary internationally. It examines how nine education systems across five continents represent ‘good writing’ in curricula that shape students’ experiences learning to write in school. The book presents curricular analyses aimed at providing insight into how writing development can be better supported through innovative policy and research. The findings regarding international variation are presented under three broad dimensions: social and contextual factors that shape writing curricula; the discourses of writing reflected in curricula and official documents; and hallmarks of classroom practice, including the relationship with official discourse. Leaders in English Language Arts Education Research contains autobiographical essays by leading English Language Arts scholars throughout the world. In this volume, English Language Arts is presented as a complex and porous discipline—intersecting with writing, literacy studies, multicultural/multilingual education, digital and multimodal literacies, critical and social justice pedagogies, teacher education, linguistics and second language learning, and, not least of all, subject English, including teaching literature and drama.
