Multiscale modeling of cardiac electrophysiology helps to better understand the underlying mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, acute cardiac ischemia and pharmacological treatment. For this purpose, measurement data reflecting these conditions have to be integrated into models of cardiac electrophysiology. Several methods for this model adaptation are introduced in this thesis. The resulting effects are investigated in multiscale simulations ranging from the ion channel up to the body surface.AbstractEnglisch = Multiscale modeling of cardiac electrophysiology helps to better understand the underlying mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, acute cardiac ischemia and pharmacological treatment. Over the last century, the scale of Canada’s domestic disaster response system has grown significantly due to the country’s increased capacity for emergency management and the rise in natural hazards. However, there has been no systematic assessment of how effectively this multilevel system, which includes all levels of government and the military, has been integrated, and how efficient this system actually is at responding to high-level disasters. Using in-depth archival analysis and interviews with senior military and civilian officials on the inside, Boots on the Ground provides a detailed examination of Canada’s disaster response system. Including policy recommendations focused on the expansion of emergency management networks, the maintenance of Canada’s decentralized emergency management system, and disaster response resources for First Nations communities, Boots on the Ground aims to highlight opportunities to improve Canada’s urgent disaster response. Boots on the Ground offers helpful lessons for students, policy makers, emergency management practitioners, and military officers, ensuring that readers gain concrete insights into the strategic and efficient implementation of disaster response initiatives.

This book introduces pathophysiology and practical heart failure (HF) management at the acute, in-hospital stages during hospitalization and also in the end-stages of HF. Given its increasing incidence and prevalence, we live in a world that is essentially facing an HF pandemic. A country with an ageing population, Japan is unique in terms of the selection of medical treatment, diagnostic techniques, team managing and other approaches. This book sheds new light on the clinical challenges involved in reducing re-hospitalization and improving patients’ prognosis and ADL/QOL, while also reporting on the status quo in Japan. By highlighting these challenges and the methods used to address them, it will encourage experts around the globe to intensively discuss and accelerate research in this field. Including contributions by authors who have played central roles in managing HF in Japan, the book offers an indispensable guide not only for clinicians, technicians and nurses in this field, but also for general physicians, emergency physicians and all others who are involved in the management of acute and end-stage HF.
