Rob Roy MacGregor was a historical figure—an outlaw who "owed his fame in a great measure to his residing on the very verge of the Highlands, and playing such pranks in the beginning of the eighteenth century as are usually ascribed to Robin Hood in the Middle Ages,—and that within forty miles of Glasgow." He was implicated in the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 —which is the period of this story—but from motives of self-interest. Francis Osbaldistone, the ostensible narrator of this tale, is a young Londoner whose father is a successful merchant and naturally wishes his son to succeed him in the business. But Francis has other ideas, and a quarrel results, in which his father sets him adrift in the world to make his own way, and threatens to disinherit him in favor of Rashleigh Osbaldistone, a Scottish cousin. Francis rides northward on a visit to Rashleigh's father, Sir Hildebrand of Osbaldistone Hall. On his way thither he falls in with a nervous traveller named Morris, who afterwards accuses him wrongly of the theft of his bag; but is cleared on the intervention of a supposed cattle-dealer, Campbell ...

When Frank Obaldistone is sent, disinherited and in disgrace, to live with his uncle, Sir Hildebrand, he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Diana Vernon. But, when his cousin Rashleigh steals documents that are vital to his father’s livelihood and reputation, Frank has no choice but to pursue him to restore his father’s honour and his family’s good name. Along the way, Frank crosses paths with the legendary Rob Roy—an infamous Scottish folk hero who has information of benefit to Frank and his family. Set against the backdrop of the 1715 Jacobite Rising in Scotland, Sir Walter Scott’s Rob Roy is both an epic tale of adventure and romance, and a realistic reflection of the brutal living and social conditions present in Scotland during the early eighteenth century. Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott is a historical fiction novel that includes a character based on Robert Roy MacGregor. It is part of the Waverley novels, a series of Scott's books that focused on Scottish history. The setting of Rob Roy is Scotland just before the Jacobite rising of 1715. The narrator and main character of the story is the Englishman Frank Osbaldistone. Frank has a fight with his father because he does not want to join the family business. Because of the fight, Frank's father sends him to stay with his uncle, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone, who is a Jacobite. On his way to his uncle's house, Frank bumps into Rob Roy, the outlaw, who is disguised as a man named Mr. Campbell. Frank also meets Diana Vernon, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone's niece, and eventually falls in love with her. Rashleigh, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone's son, steals financial documents essential to the Osbaldistone family and escapes to Scotland. Frank decides to get help from Rob Roy in order to restore his father's honor. The Jacobite risings break out and in the battle Rashleigh tries to kill Frank, but Rob Roy kills Rashleigh before he can do so. In the end, Frank inherits the Osbaldistone estate and marries Diana. While Rob Roy is a mysterious and minor character in the book, he is instrumental in the final fight against Rashleigh. More than anything, Rob Roy and the Jacobite risings set the stage for the other characters to develop in this historical fiction novel.
