Excerpt from Rudiments of the Art of Building: In Five Sections General Principles of Construction; Materials Used in Building; Strength of Materials; Use of Materials; Working Drawings, Specifications, and Estimates In offering this little volume to the public, it may be desirable to say a few words, by way of preface, as to the object and character of the work. It has been written at the suggestion of the publisher, to accompany the Rudimentary Series, and as a first book on the Art of Building, intended for the use of young persons who are about to commence their professional training for any pursuit connected with the erection of buildings; and, also, for the use of amateurs who wish to obtain a general knowledge of the subject without devoting to it the time requisite for the study of the larger works that have been written on the different branches of construction. To avoid unnecessarily extending the limits of the work, those subjects are omitted which are treated of in other volumes of this series, as Building Stone, Brick-making, and the Composition of Colours and Varnishes. For the same reason little has been said of the manufacture of glass and the smelting of metallic ores, because they have been repeatedly treated of in various elementary works, whilst a considerable space has been devoted to the consideration of the differences between hot and cold blast irons, and to the description of the operations of the iron-founder, subjects which are not generally to he met with but in expensive works. The equilibrium of retaining walls is a subject which has long engaged the attention of mathematicians with little practical success, the results arrived at by different eminent writers being quite at variance with each other.
