This book describes in a detailed fashion the application of hybrid intelligent systems using soft computing techniques for intelligent control and mobile robotics. Soft Computing (SC) consists of several intelligent computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, neural networks, and bio-inspired optimization algorithms, which can be used to produce powerful hybrid intelligent systems. The prudent combination of SC techniques can produce powerful hybrid intelligent systems that are capable of solving real-world problems. This is illustrated in this book with a wide range of applications, with particular emphasis in intelligent control and mobile robotics. The book is organized in five main parts, which contain a group of papers around a similar subject. The first part consists of papers with the main theme of theory and algorithms, which are basically papers that propose new models and concepts, which can be the basis for achieving intelligent control and mobile robotics. The second part contains papers with the main theme of intelligent control, which are basically papers using bio-inspired techniques, like evolutionary algorithms and neural networks, for achieving intelligent control of non-linear plants. The third part contains papers with the theme of optimization of fuzzy controllers, which basically consider the application of bio-inspired optimization methods to automate the de-sign process of optimal type-1 and type-2 fuzzy controllers. The fourth part contains papers that deal with the application of SC techniques in times series prediction and intelligent agents. The fifth part contains papers with the theme of computer vision and robotics, which are papers considering soft computing methods for applications related to vision and robotics.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that models the human ability of reasoning, usage of human language and organization of knowledge, solving problems and practically all other human intellectual abilities. Usually it is characterized by the application of heuristic methods because in the majority of cases there is no exact solution to this kind of problem. Soft computing can be viewed as a branch of AI that deals with the problems that explicitly contain incomplete or complex information, or are known to be impossible for direct computation, i.e., these are the same problems as in AI but viewed from the perspective of their computation. The Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (MICAI), a yearly international conference series organized by the Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence (SMIA), is a major international AI forum and the main event in the academic life of the country’s growing AI community. In 2010, SMIA celebrated 10 years of activity related to the organization of MICAI as is represented in its slogan “Ten years on the road with AI”. MICAI conferences traditionally publish high-quality papers in all areas of artificial intelligence and its applications. The proceedings of the previous MICAI events were also published by Springer in its Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series, vols. 1793, 2313, 2972, 3789, 4293, 4827, 5317, and 5845. Since its foundation in 2000, the conference has been growing in popularity and improving in quality.

The two-volume set LNAI 7094 and 7095 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, MICAI 2011, held in Puebla, Mexico, in November/December 2011. The 96 revised papers presented were carefully selected from XXX submissions. The second volume contains 46 papers focusing on soft computing. As with other ICT events in the past, this professional meeting continues to be highly competitive and very well perceived by the international networking community, - tracting excellent contributions and active participation. This year, a total of 430 papers from 36 countries were submitted, from which 188 were accepted. Each paper was - viewed by several members of the ICT2004 Technical Program Committee. We were very pleased to receive a large percentage of top-quality contributions.
