This book examines the effects of a study abroad experience on students' culture and identity and the impact of these effects on their readjustment to their home culture. It explores issues of culture and identity from the perspective of French students studying in Australia. Issues of perceived cultural proximity between France and Australia, a relative lack of prior knowledge of the host country before the period of study and the impact of distance all influence aspects of these students' experiences. Employing long-term and cross-sectional studies focusing on culture shock, reverse culture shock and cultural identity issues, the author investigates the cyclical journey of French academic sojourners and examines the impact of the acculturation and repatriation processes and the language experiences on their perceptions of cultural identity. Once the students had traversed the difficult stages of culture shock and reached the stage of full recovery (adjustment), they no longer wished to go home. What impact has this process had on the returnees who faced the insularity of their home society once they returned home? Is the French community beginning to acknowledge the start of a brain-drain of the educated French overseas? What are the implications for borderless higher education? What value should be placed on pre-departure preparation from participating institutions and the individuals themselves, both on a linguistic and a psychological level? This book poses questions relating to these issues.

Depuis ces 10 dernières années les gens n'ont jamais eu autant d'amis. Quand on était jeune par exemple, on peinait à trouver 10 amis à inviter pour son anniversaire. Autrefois les critères de l'amitié étaient bien différents. La confidence intime primait ainsi que les expériences partagées. Mais aujourd'hui en se connectant sur Facebook, on a régulièrement des gens qui se proposent de devenir notre « ami » en 1 clic. Si on ne se contente que d'avoir 5 vrais amis dans sa liste d'amis on parait pour une personne totalement impopulaire, du coup les gens ont vu leurs critères amicaux revus à la baisse en se contentant d'ajouter à sa liste d'amis les amis de leurs amis.Du coup on obtient clairement une représentation totalement opposée de ce qu'est une véritable amitié. Entre la sincérité et la vérité tout part en fumée pour laisser place à de faux liens.Aujourd'hui moins de personnes cherchent réellement les relations intimes et sincères, elles sont d'autant plus superficielles que qualitatives. Ne pas s'obliger à dire constamment la vérité permet de se fortifier une bulle sécuritaire autour de ses relations et de son image.Aujourd'hui on accepte n'importe qui dans sa liste d'amis, les camarades d'école, ses profs, les rencontres de vacances etc... Si on le pouvait on souhaiterait approfondir ces liens mais le temps nous manque.Dorénavant on parle d'amitiés « Kleenex » autrement dit de «relations jetables», l'amitié sincère et durable semble en voie de disparition.L'Amitié avec un grand « A » est avant tout le partage de moments réels, mais celle-ci a été délaissée au dépend de l'amitié 2.0.
