The Sea Fairies is a children's fantasy novel written by L. Frank Baum, illustrated by John R. Neill, and published in 1911 by the Reilly & Britton Company, the publisher of Baum's series of Oz books. Baum dedicated the book to the otherwise-unknown "Judith of Randolph, Massachusetts" — most likely one of the child readers who corresponded with the author.

THE oceans are big and broad. I believe two-thirds of the earth's surface is covered with water. What people inhabit this water has always been a subject of curiosity to the inhabitants of the land. Strange creatures come from the seas at times, and perhaps in the ocean depths are many, more strange than mortal eye has ever gazed upon. This story is fanciful. In it the sea people talk and act much as we do, and the mermaids especially are not unlike the fairies with whom we have learned to be familiar. Yet they are real sea people, for all that, and with the exception of Zog the Magician they are all supposed to exist in the ocean's depths. I am told that some very learned people deny that mermaids or sea-serpents have ever inhabited the oceans, but it would be very difficult for them to prove such an assertion unless they had lived under the water as Trot and Cap'n Bill did in this story. I hope my readers who have so long followed Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz will be interested in Trot's equally strange experiences. The ocean has always appealed to me as a veritable wonderland, and this story has been suggested to me many times by my young correspondents in their letters. Indeed, a good many children have implored me to "write something about the mermaids," and I have willingly granted the request.

Mayre Griffiths, nicknamed Trot, or sometimes Tiny Trot, is a little girl who lives on the coast of southern California. Her father is the captain of a sailing schooner, and her constant companion is Cap'n Bill Weedles, a retired sailor with a wooden leg. (Cap'n Bill had been Trot's father's skipper, and Charlie Griffiths had been his mate, before the accident that took the older man's leg.) Trot and Cap'n Bill spend many of their days roaming the beaches near home, or rowing and sailing along the coast. One day, Trot wishes that she could see a mermaid; her wish is overheard, and granted the next day. The mermaids explain to Trot, and the distressed Cap'n Bill, that they are benevolent fairies; when they offer Trot a chance to pay a visit to their land in mermaid form, Trot is enthusiastic, and Bill is too loyal to let her go off without him.

This “wondrous” collection of fantasy tales from Neil Gaiman, Patricia A. McKillip, and others “is a treasure chest. Open it and revel in its riches” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). For this enchanting anthology—a World Fantasy Award finalist—editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling “asked their contributors to reimagine Fäerie” in the present day, or “search its more dimly lit pathways,” and the authors have responded with bountiful imagination. The title piece is a poem by Neil Gaiman, but most of the others are longer pieces, “like shards of stories you want to hear more of.” Jeffrey Ford “limns the heartbreaking tale” of fairies who live in sandcastles built by young children; Ellen Steiber’s ‘Screaming for Fairies’ “sketches the lineaments of desire.” Bruce Glassco “finds a different voice for Tinkerbell and Captain Hook in ‘Never Never.’” Tanith Lee’s ‘Elvenbrood’ tale is eerie and “chilling.” Gregory Maguire, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Patricia A. McKillip, and Emma Bull’s stories all “enchant” and bewitch. Delia Sherman’s ‘CATNYP’ is “both funny and deeply clever, warming the cockles of anyone who has ever had dealings with a research library, especially New York Public’s” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). This companion volume to The Green Man: Tales from the Mythic Forest is “a rewarding choice for those who like the traditional with a twist” (Booklist).
