Halsey's Planet is in decline, and when a generation ship arrives, having failed to contact six other planets, Ross is sent to discover the state of the interstellar colonies. He is given a ship which can make the trip from colony to colony almost instantaneously. The technology used in the ship has been kept secret because it could give rise to interstellar war if one colony decided to conquer others. However, the isolated populations are also affected by genetic drift resulting in a decline in their societies.

This is a classic science fiction short story by James H. Schmitz and illustrated by Brotman. The following passage is part of its intriguing intro: 'It's one thing to try to get away with what you believe to be a lie and be caught at it- and something different, and far worse sometimes, to find it isn't a lie ...' This work is part of our Vintage Sci-Fi Classics Series, a series in which we are republishing some of the best stories in the genre by some of its most acclaimed authors, such as Isaac Asimov, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Robert Sheckley.

Welcome to The 11th Science Fiction MEGAPACK®! We hope you will enjoy the stories we have selected for you this time. There's a greater emphasis than usual on Golden Age writers (just the way it came together) -- but we have one original story as well, a posthumous collaboration with H.B. Fyfe, finishing a really terrific but not-quite-done tale he had been working on before his death. It's a bit reminiscent of James Tiptree, Jr.'s best work -- but predates Tiptree by a couple of decades. And we have novels by Robert Silverberg, Frederik Pohl & C.M. Kornbluth, Murray Leinster, E. Everett Evans, and Donald Wollheim...not to mention part 2 of our serialization of Tony Rothman's mammoth 2013 novel, Firebird. And a ton of great short stories. 36 works in all, more than 1900 pages of great reading! ANGELS IN THE JETS, by Jerome Bixby A CODE FOR SAM, by Lester del Rey STAR SHIP, by Poul Anderson THE WELL-OILED MACHINE, by H.B. Fyfe JACK OF NO TRADES, by Evelyn E. "In "Tarrano the Conqueror" is presented a tale of the year 2430 A.D.—a time somewhat farther beyond our present-day era than we are beyond Columbus' discovery of America. My desire has been to create for you the impression that you have suddenly been plunged forward into that time—to give you the feeling Columbus might have had could he have read a novel of our present-day life."

Search the Sky by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth About all of Halsey's Planet there was the imperceptible reek of decay. The clean, big, bustling, efficient spaceport only made the sensation stronger. From where he stood on the height of the Ramp, he could see the Yards, the spires of Halsey City ten kilometers away - and the tumble-down gray acres of Ghost Town between. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
