Excerpt from Second French Book The first french book was drawn up according to the best continental methods, of which the above quotation admirably expresses the aim. An eminent critic said of my first french book that it is arranged so that the Old-fashioned teacher can use it, and so that he will not be old-fashioned any longer when he has used it. The second french book is intended to follow on the same lines. Upon the practical suggestion of a colleague, I have fused the second and third french books into one: the first french book with its 30 'lessons' takes an average School one year and a half to get through; the second french book with its 40 'lessons' will pro bably occupy two years and a half if not three, especially as the Lessons are more condensed. It was thought preferable to have only two French Books 'for Preparatory Schools or the Junior forms of any schools. I have endeavoured to make this second french book as self-contained and independent of the first as possible. I have given a little less guidance to the teacher. Excerpt from Second Year In French The end aimed at by every student of a modern language should be not only to read it, but also to speak and write it correctly. As the knowledge of a language evidently consists of these three essential acquirements, to neglect one of them is a mistake that no serious argument can justify. Excerpt from A Century of French Fiction Two years ago I published a book on Modern French Literature, which involved brief mention of the present subject. That phrases of the earlier volume should occasionally recur in this is perhaps inevitable. The two books are, however, distinct in purpose and in method. Chapter VIII. And portions Of Chapter I. Have appeared in The Sewanee Review. The origins of fiction in France, and its history till the French Revolution, I hope to treat in another volume, for which all materials are well in hand. Excerpt from Second French Exercise Book I shall feel truly thankful for any criticisms and com ments which may be addressed to me with the View of rendering both the grammar and the two exercise books more useful to the young. The way in which I may make use of such communications will, I hope, be the best proof of my gratitude, and of the fact that I am more anxious to be taught and to teach what is right, than to conceal the fact that I am liable to make mistakes.
