Excerpt from Second Year In French The end aimed at by every student of a modern language should be not only to read it, but also to speak and write it correctly. As the knowledge of a language evidently consists of these three essential acquirements, to neglect one of them is a mistake that no serious argument can justify. Excerpt from French Course, Second Year This "Second Course," like the First, is based on the following principles, the soundness of which has been proved by years of practical experience: - (1) A living language must be heard before being seen. (2) The actions, persons, objects, scenes described must be imagined; i.e. seen in the mind, while the teacher speaks. (3) Every sentence contains a basic word (generally the verb) which should be learnt first. (4) Sentences are much more easily remembered if they are learnt in their logical succession. (5) Subjective sentences (expressing thoughts, feelings, judgments, etc.) are best learnt by oral teaching in the form of conversation. Directions are given on pages 1 to 4 of the First Course for the rational teaching and study of the exercises, verbs, and conversation sentences. In addition to the Exercises and Conversation sentences, rules of grammar are given, in French as well as in English, and should be learnt in French. Excerpt from Second French Book The first french book was drawn up according to the best continental methods, of which the above quotation admirably expresses the aim. An eminent critic said of my first french book that it is arranged so that the Old-fashioned teacher can use it, and so that he will not be old-fashioned any longer when he has used it. The second french book is intended to follow on the same lines. Upon the practical suggestion of a colleague, I have fused the second and third french books into one: the first french book with its 30 'lessons' takes an average School one year and a half to get through; the second french book with its 40 'lessons' will pro bably occupy two years and a half if not three, especially as the Lessons are more condensed. It was thought preferable to have only two French Books 'for Preparatory Schools or the Junior forms of any schools. I have endeavoured to make this second french book as self-contained and independent of the first as possible. I have given a little less guidance to the teacher. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
