Restorative justice, as it exists in Canada and the U.S., has been co-opted and relegated to the sidelines of the dominant criminal justice system. In Security, With Care, Elizabeth M. Elliott argues that restorative justice cannot be actualized solely within the criminal justice system. If it isn’t who we are, says Elliott, then the policies will never be sustainable. Restorative justice must be more than a program within the current system – it must be a new paradigm for responding to harm and conflict. Facilitating this shift requires a rethinking of the assumptions around punishment and justice, placing emphasis instead on values and relationships. But if we can achieve this change, we have the potential to build a healthier, more ethical and more democratic society.

The efficiency of modern health care relies more and more upon a computerised infrastructure. Open distributed information systems have started to bring professionals together from all over the world. On the one hand easy processing and communication of images, sound and texts will help to visualize and therefore treat illnesses and diseases efficiently, on the other hand the very ease of access and use can threaten patient privacy, accountability and health care professional secrecy. Developments in community care are responsible for the fact that many aspects of patient care are delivered outside the closed walls of a hospital and hence patient records must also be accessible and updated throughout the community. Therefore, the introduction of information technology should focus primarily on the improvement of the health of patients or, at least, not putting patients' health at risk. This means that the right data has to be available to the right person at the right time (availability). Information technology deeply affects the confidential relationship between patient and doctor, since it increasingly surrounds and mediates it. Information systems in health care establishments are increasingly developing towards an integrated system where various users can interact and communicate. The process of integration will cross the borders of local health care establishments and it will progressively expand, e.g., into patients' homes, into a European health care community, in order to support the mobility of patients, the exchange of medical and administrational data, transfer of bills and money.

This book examines the process of population aging in China and its unique features, considers the social progress implied in China becoming a society with an aging population, and assesses the tremendous risks and challenges involved. Based on the development of pension security systems around the world, the book studies the status quo and future requirements of the Chinese pension security system from the perspectives of capital, service and spirit, and puts forwards a three-pillar pension security system that is in conformity with China’s current situation – and reflects the developmental trend that, in future, social security will likely transform from material security into comprehensive security. In addition, the book analyzes the Chinese pension security system. While integrating international perspectives, its main focus is on statistical analysis, combining theory with practice, and qualitative with quantitative analysis. As such, the book not only offers a “wi ndow” for the world on the status and evolution of China’s pension security system, but also an opportunity for international academic dialogues.

This insightful volume argues that care workers--those looking after children, the elderly, and people with disabilities--require security similar to any other group of workers. It provides a valuable overview and analysis of care work as a relevant social policy phenomenon in industrialized and developing countries around the world, while exploring pivotal questions such as how provisions for care are made, who is to benefit, and who is to pay.
