See Yourself X (SYX) is the second volume of Madeline Schwartzman's timely series that look at the human perception and the sensory apparatus.See Yourself Sensing: Redefining Human Perception (2011)the first of the series, is a collection of fifty years of futuristic proposals for the body and the senses.See Yourself X focuses in on our fundamental perceptual domainthe human headpresenting an array of conceptual and constructed ideas for extending ourselves physically into space. What will be the physical future of the head and the sensory apparatus in fifty years time, as the mechanisms for how we communicate and sense change and become obsolete, prompted, possibly, by the advancement of brain-to-brain communication? SYX looks at where we are now, in the hope of projecting into that future. SYX explores all forms of physical head augmentation, including new organs, hair extensions and dos, masks, head constructions and gear, headdresses, prosthetics and helmets by artists, designers, inventors, scientists, and world cultures, as well as technological extensions into space. Conceptual topics include the obliteration of the face in fashion, art and folk wedding costume; the politics of hair extension from 18th century hair rolls to contemporary fashion; surrealistic juxtapositions of objects and the head; gender, ritual and identity in contemporary art hair and hair constructions; space-age architectural helmets of the 60s, and conceptual projects that highlight, analyse or deny the internal or perceived functioning of the head and brain. Everyone with a head should be interested in this book. SYX had inauspicious origins. In March 2012 Schwartzman was involved in an airplane crash on the way to a book talk. The wing of her Delta MD-80 knocked over a shuttle bus at over 150 miles per hour while landing in Detroit. Luckily no one was hurt. But it did spark an investigation: do pilots feel the width of their wings? If so, this would mean that the head was effectively approximately 150 feet wide? This was the catalyst for SYX: to look across art practices and contemporary culture at all ways of extending the head into space, and to move headlong into the future. See Yourself Sensing has been used widely at design institutions across the world.See Yourself X, like its predecessor, will be both an exhibition in book form, and an academic book, with examples of Schwartzman's innovative head-centred design projects from Columbia University and Parsons.

Full of insights and very practical, this important book by the Dalai Lama shows that self-knowledge is the key to personal development and creating positive relationships How to See Yourself As You Really Are is based on a fundamental Buddhist belief that love and insight work together to bring about enlightenment, like two wings of a bird. It provides a new perspective on the psychological problems of hurting ourselves through misguided, exaggerated notions of self, others, events and physical things. It shows how even our senses deceive us, drawing us into unwise attachments and negative actions that can only come back to haunt us in the future. Drawing on wisdom and techniques refined in Tibetan monasteries for more than a thousand years, and adopting as its structure traditional Buddhist steps of meditative reflection, How to See Yourself As You Really Are includes practical exercises and gives readers a clear path to assess their growth and personal development. The book is enlivened throughout with warm personal anecdotes and intimate accounts of the Dalai Lama's experiences as a life-long student, a meditator, a political leader and an international figure working with other Nobel Peace Laureates to address crises around the world. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet. Today, he lives in exile in Northern India and works tirelessly on behalf of the Tibetan people, as well as travelling the world to give spiritual teachings to sell-out audiences. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

In 1984 I took Sannyas with Osho, a contemporary mystic, and soon after was introduced to NLP and Hypnotherapy. Osho gave me a breadth and depth of knowledge about religion, and an experience of meditation that I would never have been able to find through normal channels. Most importantly, Osho taught me not to rely upon borrowed knowledge but to make your own existential inquiry into truth – to challenge everything for the ultimate Truth – and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Hypnosis gave me the tools to do just that. I have attempted to present to the reader a new way of understanding faith healing, placebo, mind-body healing, conscious mind, unconscious mind, ego, religion, spirituality, channelling, angels, god, devil, heaven, hell, near death experiences, spiritual experiences and enlightenment – from the framework of NLP, hypnosis, meditation and the science of flow states. The book was written over a period of eight years which gave me time to continually update the notes until it takes the form that you see it now. It explores the concept that we are the meaning maker – that we are the one who give meaning to events that occur in the world; we are the one who gives meaning to the experiences that we have, and to the experiences that others have – meaning is not inherent in the event – we create the meaning – we are the meaning maker. Sometimes that meaning serves us, sometimes it does not. Sometimes that meaning serves us but does not serve others. The book explores the process of giving prestige, of adulation and worship. Of how we may be too quick to create fiction and fantasy based upon ideas that we hold in mind. Of how we may be looking in the wrong direction to find God. However, this book is not a book about God – it is a book based upon my own existential experience. I wrote the book, in part because it maps out my own personal inquiry into truth – and because I want to help wake people up to themselves such that they might realise their true potential – whether you call that Self Realisation, Enlightenment or Self Actualisation. “The unconscious mind is like a silent partner, that is always present, knows your every thought and your every desire, has the power to affect both body and mind at the core of your being, and is always ready to help you, as long as you should just communicate in the right way. Hmm... sounds much like God.” Abby Eagle

First published in 1979, Group Counseling has consistently been a widely used and praised text, providing both novice and experienced counselors with a framework from which to expand their group counseling skills and knowledge. This fifth edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the newest work in the field, the 2009 CACREP standards, and the Association for Specialists in Group Work practice standards. As in the previous editions, the authors draw upon their extensive experience and share their own styles of leading groups as a personal and practical way to illustrate the differences in group leadership. Berg, Landreth, and Fall present a thorough discussion of the rationale for using group counseling with an emphasis on the group's role as a preventive environment and as a setting for self-discovery. The authors examine the group facilitator's internal frame of reference and ways to overcome of initial anxiety about leading groups, and they also explore typical problems in the development, facilitation, and termination of the group process and provide suggested solutions. Application of group counseling is considered with children, adolescents, adults, as well as with special populations, such as abused children, juvenile offenders, and individuals with emotional difficulties. A helpful glossary of group counseling terminology provides a quick reference source for important terms. New to this edition are a chapter on diversity and social justice in group work an expanded chapter on co-leadership, a topic often ignored in other group counseling texts separate chapters on group work with children and group work with adolescents so that reader can focus more easily on the unique aspects of working with each population a chapter on evaluating groups at the leader, group, and individual member levels. A collection of supplemental resources is available online to benefit both instructors and students. Instructors will find PowerPoint slides and test banks to aid in conducting their courses, and students can access questions for thought and reflection to supplement their review of the chapters in the text.
