Mamas Voice is the product of a middle-aged Christian psychiatrist and mother who journals her life observations and experiences, hoping to pass on some life lessons to her children. What started off as random journaling of thoughts ended up being a published book released as a birthday present for her children. The book is written in a random manner with life lessons ranging from self-esteem, bad habits, addictions, snobbery, conflict, money, selfishness, greed, and codependent relationships through to family dramas. The author attempts to capture some important life lessons with a touch of humor and rawness that depicts the real-life dramas. Both pleasurable and painful life observations and experiences are unapologetically expressed with a rawness that does not coat it with sweet candy. Its about real life seen through the eyes of a mother going through a midlife crisis and questioning most things she had taken for granted. The messages are given as direct instructions to her children in second or third person voices and riddles. The messages are just as random as they entered the authors thoughts. This is a light read for both the middle aged and young, who are questioning a few things in their worldview. Like the philosopher in the book of Ecclesiastes, the author grapples with certain life issues until she finally realizes that she cannot fix the world and she gives up control. The forty-five-year-old author starts off by writing a letter to her thirteen-year-old self and ends the book with her modified version of the Ten Commandments and a futuristic letter to her eighty-five-year-old self.

We are said to be suffering a narcissism epidemic when the need for collective action seems more pressing than ever. The traits of Selfishness and selflessness address the ‘proper’ and ‘improper’ relationship between one’s self and others. The work they do during periods of social instability and cultural change is probed in this original, interdisciplinary collection. Contributions range from an examination of how these concepts animated the eighteenth-century anti-slavery campaigners to a dissection of the way middle-class mothers’ experiences illustrate gendered struggles over how much and to whom one is morally obliged to give.

In Ibiza Man, Michael Lieberman gathers an array of inventive and unforgettable stories. In this, his second collection, he demonstrates his abilities in precisely distilled, unflinchingly honest studies of human connection and disconnection. From the deliverance of an English working girl's dysfunctional relationship to a spoiled aristocrat by the mysterious Ibiza man; the fate of a trouble female attorney's long lost lover revealed at a lunch with Mike Arnold; a rock star's return to his twentieth high school reunion, including a dance with his most potent past muse; to the punch line, the exclamation point to a well-intentioned, but disastrous family reunion, Lieberman evokes painful and tender truths, poetic, painful, and deeply political. The well-meaning protagonists of Ibiza Man are caught to both disastrous and hilarious effect in the maelstrom of family and social upheaval, life in the modern world, and the intimate connection between the foreign, familiar, and the inescapably human. In Ibiza Man Michael Lieberman delves deep into the heart of modern life in a work that overflows with hilarity, heartache, and irony.

Jane Bennett Gaddy has captured in her third installment of the Payne family, JOAB, a piece of the history for Faulkners little postage stamp of native soil with a combination of history and fiction. She places Joab in Oxford, known as Jefferson in the Faulkner novels, at a time when this town was at its lowest. History and fiction sometimes come together and Gaddy has given us something, as Oxonians, to think about in our little postage stamp of native soil. Jack Lamar Mayfield, Columnist, The Oxford Eagle
