Until the late 1950s residents of Vancouver and Victoria negotiated a shopping landscape that would be unrecognizable to today’s consumers: most stores were closed for at least half the day on Wednesdays, prevented from opening during the evenings, and were banned from operating on Sundays. Since that decade, however, British Columbians, and Canadians generally, have made significant strides in gaining greater and easier access to consumer goods. Selling Out or Buying In? is the first work to illuminate the process by which consumers’ access to goods and services was liberalized and deregulated in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century. Michael Dawson’s engagingly written and detailed exploration of the debates amongst everyday citizens and politicians regarding the pros and cons of expanding shopping opportunities, challenges the assumption of inevitability surrounding Canada’s emergence as a consumer society. The expansion of store hours was a highly contested and contingent development that pitted employees, owners and regulators against one another. Dawson’s nuanced analysis of archival and newspaper sources reveals the strains that modern capitalism imparted upon the accepted and established rhythms of daily life.

Joe Girard was an example of a young man with perseverance and determination. Joe began his working career as a shoeshine boy. Forget everything you learned about selling. Persuasion is not a sales skill—it’s a blunt instrument of last resort that sellers use when they don’t know how to influence the choices their buyers make. It’s the weapon of choice for mindless, uninspired sellers: the sales zombies who have stopped learning and stopped improving. Wouldn’t you rather learn how to master the art of selling in, by listening to what your buyers really want? In Sell without Selling Out, global sales guru, top podcaster, and entrepreneur Andy Paul shows you how to take charge of your own career without selling out to outdated, ineffective sales methods. He reveals the four Sell In pillars that are the indispensable instruments of selling: Connection, Curiosity, Understanding, Generosity. Everything else is mostly a combination of product features, technical specifications and pricing, which your buyers can get from the Internet. What they seek (and deserve) can only come from you: the human seller. If you’ve been told you need to be more “salesy” to get ahead in your career, you need this book. #DeathToSalesy

When making profit plans, most owners work only on a day-to-day basis and give no thought to an exit or succession. Many are unaware that it is possible to work on the profit and capital value at the same time. Here the authors show the owner how to achieve maximum income during his/her stewardship of the business, while planning for a sizeable business asset through a sale. Using case studies and detailed guidance, the book provides practical advice on how to create and improve capital value through various means, such as leadership, people, culture and branding.
