Originally published in 1916, Serbia in Light and Darkness is Velimirovic's retelling of the history of his people. He wishes to share with the Western world the story of his people at their best and the story of his people at their worst-a history that many are completely unfamiliar with. Velimirovic speaks on the character of the Serbian soul and how the suffering endured by his countrymen has forged them into a unique people with an abiding faith. Offering a deep understanding of culture and national pride, this small book will be of interest to religious scholars, historians, and anyone with a passion for understanding international relations. Serbian bishop NIKOLAJ VELIMIROVIC (1880-1956) was a member of the Orthodox church and prominent, though controversial theological writer: though canonized by the Orthodox church, some of his writings are considered anti-Semitic. Among his most prominent writings are The Religious Spirit of the Slavs (1916) and Beyond Sin and Death (1914).

The aim of this volume is to give to the English-speaking people some glimpses into the past struggles, sufferings and hopes of the Serbian nation. I have tried to describe the Serbian life in light, in its peace, its peaceful work, its songs and prayers; in darkness, in its slavery, its sins, its resistance to evil and battle for freedom.Notice: This Book is published by Historical Books Limited (www.publicdomain.org.uk) as a Public Domain Book, if you have any inquiries, requests or need any help you can just send an email to [email protected] This book is found as a public domain and free book based on various online catalogs, if you think there are any problems regard copyright issues please contact us immediately via [email protected]

Nikolaj Velimirovic (1880-1956) was a bishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an influential theological writer and political emigrant after the Communist takeover of Josip Broz Tito in Yugoslavia. He strongly supported the unity of all Orthodox churches and established particularly good relations with the Anglican and Episcopal Church. He obtained doctorates from the University of Berne (1908), while the thesis was published in German in 1910, whereas the doctor's degree in philosophy was prepared at Oxford and defended in Geneva (Filozofija Berklija: Berkeley's Philosophy in French) in 1909. At the end of 1909 he entered a monastic order. In 1919, then Archimandrite Nikolai was consecrated Bishop of the Monastery Zica of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In 1915 he was delegated to England and America by the Serbian Church, where he held numerous lectures, fighting for the union of the Serbs and South Slavic peoples. At the beginning of 1919 he returned to Serbia, and in 1920 was posted to the Ohrid archbishopric in Macedonia, where in 1935, in Bitola he reconstructed the cemetery of the fallen German soldiers from WWI.
