Sergey Karjakin (1990) will be the challenger of World Champion Magnus Carlsen in November 2016. Karjakin won the Candidates Tournament in Moscow in March 2016, the biggest success of his career so far, and earned the right to fight for the World Title in a match. Karjakin's chess talent became apparent very early on. Born in the Ukraine, he became the world's youngest grandmaster at the age of 12 years and 7 months - a record that still stands. In 2009 he moved to Moscow, adopted Russian citizenship, and switched from the Ukraine chess federation to the Russian, to be able to get better coaching. It was a key moment in his life, says Karjakin in New In Chess magazine. 'From 2003 till 2009 I didn't have any support. When I moved to Moscow I got the possibility to work with strong coaches.' Karjakin won numerous tournaments: the 2012 World Rapid Chess Championship and the Chess World Cup in 2015. He also won the Norway Chess Tournament twice (2013, 2014) and the Corus Chess Tournament in 2009. Karjakin is a top-10 player in classical chess, as well as in rapid and blitz. His career high rating was 2788 (in July 2011). 'A serious fighter with hardly any weak points', says commentator Sergey Shipov about Karjakin in New In Chess magazine. 'He is able to compose himself at critical moments, and he is able to motivate himself for the most important games and tournaments. And also he has matured.' Try this training book and play the same winning moves as Sergey Karjakin. This book offers you one hundred training exercises, in positions where Karjakin turned the game in his favour. The puzzles, first with Karjakin playing White and then with him playing Black, start at a moderate level and gradually get more difficult. Don't give up!

Opening, middlegame and endgame are the three universally recognized stages of a game of chess, but what about the art of preparation? Winning starts with planning before the game, teaches legendary chess trainer Vladimir Tukmakov in this enlightening and entertaining work on a neglected subject. Exploring and understanding, prior to the game, the strengths and weaknesses of your next opponent and being aware of your own strong points and shortcomings, are a key to success. Tukmakov describes how planning has become a systematic process, how methodical preparation works, and which critical steps you have to take. The role of the computer in preparing for a game has grown tremendously, and Modern Chess Preparation explains how it is used by top players to get organized for success. But you will also learn the limitations on the use of chess engines and databases and how disastrous it can be to overly respect them and rely on them. A separate chapter is devoted on how to prepare for all-important games, games that will decide a tournament, a match or a even an entire career. Modern Chess Preparation is about more than just opening preparation. It also teaches you how to immerse yourself in order to find the best approach to the game. The Berlin Defence has been a highly popular opening in top level chess ever since Vladimir Kramnik famously used it in the 2000 World Championship match to wrest the title from Garry Kasparov. Club players often hesitate to include ‘the Berlin’ in their repertoire because they see the typical Berlin Wall endgame as complex and daunting. International Master Luis Bernal has unraveled the Berlin and made it accessible for amateur players. His practical guide is fully up to date, explains typical formations and strategies, and presents new ideas and resources in the old Berlin Wall structures. But today, the Berlin is much more than just the Wall. Bernal systematically leads you through the labyrinth of the various modern Anti-Berlins with their constant flow of new ideas. He also presents a number of tricky sidelines that could catch your opponent off guard. This no-nonsense, state-of-the-art guide finally brings this important chess opening within reach of club players. With clear explanations, concise conclusions and didactic exercises.
