They were indeed undertaken in consequence of a request made to the Writer, that he would publish some exposition on the Epistles and Gospels, such as might be suitable for private or domestic reading on the Sunday. And they were thrown into the form of Sermons, not only for the immediate occasions on which they were so used, but also as the most convenient mode in which they could appear for the purpose required.
