Living Shorelines: The Science and Management of Nature-based Coastal Protection compiles, synthesizes and interprets the current state of the knowledge on the science and practice of nature-based shoreline protection. This book will serve as a valuable reference to guide scientists, students, managers, planners, regulators, environmental and engineering consultants, and others engaged in the design and implementation of living shorelines. This volume provides a background and history of living shorelines, understandings on management, policy, and project designs, technical synthesis of the science related to living shorelines including insights from new studies, and the identification of research needs, lessons learned, and perspectives on future guidance. Makes recommendations on the correct usage of the term living shorelines Offers guidance for shoreline management in the future Includes lessons learned from the practice of shoreline restoration/conservation Synthesizes regional perspectives to identify strategies for the successful design and implementation of living shorelines Reviews specific design criteria for successful implementation of living shorelines Provides detailed discussions of social, regulatory, scientific and technical considerations to justify and design living shoreline projects International perspectives are presented from leading researchers and managers in the East, West and Gulf coasts of the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia that are working on natural approaches to shoreline management. The broad geographic scope and interdisciplinary nature of contributing authors will help to facilitate dialogue and transfer knowledge among different disciplines and across different regions. This book provides coastal communities with the scientific foundation and practical guidance necessary to implement effective shoreline management that enhances ecosystem services and coastal resilience now and into the future.

A supplement to the ¿Annotated Bibliography of Quaternary Shorelines¿ published by the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1965 (Special Pub. 6). The supplement covers the years 1965 through 1969 & contains over 1800 abstracts. A few pre-1965 abstracts are included, mainly of articles published in 1964 which reached the editors too late for inclusion in the 1965 volume. There are also some earlier abstracts, mainly from areas not thoroughly covered in the former volume. The great increase in the number of articles on Quaternary shorelines published between 1965 & 1969 reflects the expanding interest in this subject. Arranged by country.

A comprehensive introduction to the natural history and intertidal ecology of East Coast shorelines Atlantic Shorelines is an introduction to the natural history and ecology of shoreline communities on the East Coast of North America. Writing for a broad audience, Mark Bertness examines how distinctive communities of plants and animals are generated on rocky shores and in salt marshes, mangroves, and soft sediment beaches on Atlantic shorelines. The book provides a comprehensive background for understanding the basic principles of intertidal ecology and the unique conditions faced by intertidal organisms. It describes the history of the Atlantic Coast, tides, and near-shore oceanographic processes that influence shoreline organisms; explains primary production in shoreline systems, intertidal food webs, and the way intertidal organisms survive; sets out the unusual reproductive challenges of living in an intertidal habitat, and the role of recruitment in shaping intertidal communities; and outlines how biological processes like competition, predation, facilitation, and ecosystem engineering generate the spatial structure of intertidal communities. The last part of the book focuses on the ecology of the three main shoreline habitats—rocky shores, soft sediment beaches, and shorelines vegetated with salt marsh plants and mangroves—and discusses in detail conservation issues associated with each of them.

This volume is the result of an initiative of the Commission on the Coastal Environment of the International Geographical Union. The initial concept from which the plan has proceeded was presented at the 24th International Geographical Congress in Japan in 1980. AUTHORSHIP AND COVERAGE All of the articles in this volume have been written by specialists familiar with the coastal segment discussed. Nearly all have been prepared by citizens of the country (and, for that matter, even each subregion) considered. In the case of exceptions (e.g. Suriname), the authors have conducted fieldwork on the coast of the country they treat. In order to preserve the "on-the-spot" integrity of the volume, it was decided not to fill in the blanks along the world's coastline with library researched chapters. Thus, coverage is variable. Nearly every coastal country in Europe is represented whereas for Africa and South America there are major gaps. In addition, there are 2 instances of overlap. In the case of England (with a shoreline of nearly 3,000 km) a complementary chapter on Lincolnshire (with a shoreline of only 155 km) is included. The other case is the general article on the Baltic Coast of the USSR which is supported by chapters on Estonia and Lithuania.

Two freshwater shorelines are present in the Scheggs Bed of the Tipton Tongue of the Green River Formation along Hardgrove Rim in the Sand Wash basin. The shorelines are part of Lake Gosiute, which occupied southwest Wyoming, northeast Utah, and northwest Colorado during the Eocene Epoch. The rocks comprising the shorelines range in thickness from about 40 feet to 275 feet. They are composed of thick beds of resistant quartzose sandstone, and interbed- ded thin, less resistant conglomerate, siltstone, shale, oil shale, carbonaceous shale, and coal. The shorelines are vertically and horizontally divisible into fluvial channel, mud- flat, swamp, strandline, nearshore, and offshore lithofacies, which are defined by their characteristic lithologies, their sedimentary structures, or both. Each lithofacies can be identified and correlated in the outcrops along Hardgrove Rim. The term shoreline in this report refers to all of the subaerial and subaqueous margins of a lake. The investigations have revealed that the shorelines ·of the Scheggs Bed prograded extensively and that they were entirely wave dominated. They had maximum widths of about 10 miles and probably sloped less than 1 o from back shore areas lakeward to water depths below wave base. Three different environments were present along the shorelines at the land-water interface: (1) strandlines, where there were sand beaches with swash zones; (2) swamps, where vegetation grew in backshore areas out into the lake; and (3) mudflats, where wave erosion caused flooding of parts of the backshore. A columnar section illustrates freshwater lacustrine shoreline deposits that are typical of the Scheggs Bed of the Tipton Tongue and of other tongues and members of the Green River Formation.
