Diving into boiling hot water covered with oil, a hero responds. He freed the battleship USS Nevada from her berth during the Pearl Harbor attack. If it were not for Chief Bos’n Edwin J. Hill’s quick action, the USS Nevada’s run for the sea would never have occurred. She was the only battleship to sortie. Edwin J. Hill’s Irish roots lie in Cape May, New Jersey, the country’s first seaside resort. He resided at the renowned Windsor Hotel.. Mr. Hill met his beautiful wife in Ireland during World War I. They raised their children in the Philadelphia area and then onto Long Beach, California, as World War II loomed. Mr. Hill was three months from retirement when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. Sacrificing all for his country, Mr. Hill was a true hero that day. He freed the battleship he was aboard and gave his life to save many others. Chief Bos’n Hill was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Life was simpler then, before the breakup of Ma Bell, the corporate takeovers, and junk mail. His generation was deeply affected by the Great depression; the Big Band music of Goodman, Dorsey, Ellington; movies of Cowboy and Indians, Fred and Ginger; Mickey and Judy; the New York Worlds Fair; and Pearl Harbor, which forced them to leave home and go to war in places they could hardly find on a map. REVIEW What great fun! Ive never been to Brooklyn, and I feel I know the old place - and love it. Although those simple, innocent, carefree, halcyon pre-war days of 50, 60, 70 years ago are long gone, they surely come alive in this charming, laugh-out-loud poignant memoir of Brooklyn. DGuido writes as if hes talking to his reader over a beer, making the story both appealing and very accessible - a la Neil Simon, in tone and the story itself. Thanks to the author for recapturing a kinder, sweeter, gentler time with such wonderful recall. Id love to send this book to several former Brooklyn-ite friends. I cant imagine anyyone from that era or place whod not enjoy this breezy, good read.

To round out the trilogy, the two additional short stories in this volume, entitled Nazi Germany and the Sinai a Link to the Past and My First Time...under Katyusha Fire, show tantalizing glimpses of the author s extraordinary adventures in his adopted home. Sometimes he uses fictional characters to tell the story. Other times, he himself is the protagonist. But in either case, the readers will enjoy a full 360° panoramic view of the author s physical and emotional surroundings as the stories unfold.
