Silent Interviews

Collected interviews featuring the Nebula Award–winning author and his thoughts on topics like literary criticism, comic books, race, and sexuality. For nearly three decades, Samuel R. This book shows how participation of interpreters as mediators changes the dynamics of police interviews, particularly with regard to power struggles and competing versions of events. The analysis of interaction offers insights into language in the legal process.

The pioneers of the motion picture industry were a group of uncommonly talented men, women, and children. Many of their films have now vanished or disintegrated, and the only evidence of them is in the memories of their creators. The twelve men and women featured in this collection of interviews share their memories of the early days of filmmaking, from the technicalities of lighting and production, to celebrities they encountered. The interviewees include Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Virginia Cherrill, child star "Baby Peggy," director Andrew Stone, and original "Our Gang" member Jean Darling. Their stories of what it was like to make a movie in the silent era are illuminating glimpses into an era that fades with every passing year. Each interview is accompanied by a comprehensive filmography, and dozens of photographs of these celebrities and their associates are also included.

Between 1895 and 1929, more than 15,000 motion pictures were made in the United States. We call these works “silent films,” but they were accompanied by an enormous body of music, including works adapted or arranged from pre-existing works, as well as newly composed pieces for theater orchestras, organists, or pianists. While many films and pieces are lost, a considerable amount of material remains extant and available for use in research and performance. Music for Silent Film: A Guide to North American Resources is a unique resource on North American archives and English-language materials available in for those interested in this repertoire. Part I contains information about archives of primary source materials including full and compiled scores, sheet music, published anthologies of music, interviews with cinema musicians, periodicals, and instruction books. Part II surveys the English-language scholarship on silent film music in articles, book chapters, essay collections, and monographs through 2015. This study mainly focuses on the reciprocal relationship between language and identity in Chinese police-suspect investigative interviews. Based on the theory of interpersonal pragmatics, it makes a general micro analysis of discursive practices of both police officers and suspects and explores the multiple identities constructed in the interaction. Identities constructed by police officers and suspects are not necessarily consistent with their predetermined institutional roles. Police officers not only project and construct powerful identities, but also intentionally construct their less powerful interactional identities, such as helpers, interlocutors, and listeners. Suspects in the investigative interviews also build multifaceted identities, such as confessors, storytellers or justifiers. Various factors such as institutional settings, communicative objectives, interlocutors, epistemics and interpersonal relationships may exert influence on participants’ identity construction. Police officers and suspects may choose or adjust their expressions according to local interactional contexts. Their linguistic choice in the interaction will affect the establishment of interpersonal relationship between them and ultimately achieve construction of multiple identities.
