SINGING THROUGH LIFE WITH GOD 1 HE dictionary defines music as "the art of combining tones in a manner pleasing to the ear," but I think a far better definition is found in George Sterling's poem, Music, * which he opens with the following exquisite conceptions: Her face we have a little, but her voice Is not of oar imagining nor time, And her deep Boui is one, perchance, with life, Immortal, cosmic. Heritage of her Is half the human birthright. She hath part With Love and Death in the one mystery Of being, lifted on eternal wings From world to world. Her home is in our hearts. She is that moon for which the sea of tears Is ever a-tremble, and she seemeth ghost Of all past beauty, haunting yet the dusk Of unforgotten days; for of the lost, The changeless, irrecoverable years, From The Testimony of the Suns, and other Poems, by George Sterling, A. Excerpt from Singing Through Life With God No greater evidence can be given of the place music has in the helping through life of an earnest people. Those who can sing constantly, with God, carry the joy of heaven with them. It is a well known fact that workmen, singing at their work, do it better and quicker, and they them selves are less tired than those who do not sing. This second volume in Kevin Starr's passionate and ambitious cultural history of the Golden State focuses on the turn-of-the-century years and the emergence of Southern California as a regional culture in its own right. "How hauntingly beautiful, how replete with lost possibilities, seems that Southern California of two and three generations ago, now that a dramatically diferent society has emerged in its place," writes Starr. As he recreates the "lost California," Starr examines the rich variety of elements that figured in the growth of the Southern California way of life: the Spanish/Mexican roots, the fertile land, the Mediterranean-like climate, the special styles in architecture, the rise of Hollywood. He gives us a broad array of engaging (and often eccentric) characters: from Harrision Gray Otis to Helen Hunt Jackson to Cecil B. DeMille. Whether discussing the growth of winemaking or the burgeoning of reform movements, Starr keeps his central theme in sharp focus: how Californians defined their identity to themselves and to the nation.

Reimagining Indians investigates a group of Anglo-American writers whose books about Native Americans helped reshape Americans' understanding of Indian peoples at the turn of the twentieth century. Hailing from the Eastern United States, these men and women traveled to the American West and discovered "exotics" in their midst. Drawn to Indian cultures as alternatives to what they found distasteful about modern American culture, these writers produced a body of work that celebrates Indian cultures, religions, artistry, and simple humanity. Although these writers were not academically trained ethnographers, their books represent popular versions of ethnography. In revealing their own doubts about the superiority of European-American culture, they sought to provide a favorable climate for Indian cultural survival in a world indisputably dominated by non-Indians. They also encouraged notions of cultural relativism, pluralism, and tolerance in American thought. For the historian and general reader alike, this volume speaks to broad themes of American cultural history, Native American history, and the history of the American West.
