He married Martha Brett, daughter of John Brett and Elizabeth Gainer, in about 1823. They had eleven known children. He married Melissa Underwood in 1847. They had fourteen known children. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Texas.
