Somebody's got muder down to a fine art... A gory, gripping thriller by Philip Caveney. Freelance photographer Danny Weston has made a grisly discovery. While taking pictures for a forthcoming exhibition, he finds a man's body hanging from the rafters of a deserted railway arch. Despite his horror, he reaches instinctively for his camera, before summoning the police. Seeing an opportunity to draw crowds to the exhibition, Danny's manager persuades him to include the shots. But is the pursuit of such success worth the trouble? Danny soon finds himself a police suspect, and becomes embroiled in a twilight world of transvestism, tattoo parlours and porno movie-making. Who is the cunning and merciless killer? What connects the seemingly random victims? And what does any of this have to do with ancient Aztec mythology? Unfortunately, Danny may not survive long enough to work out the answers.

The Routledge Dictionary of Modern American Slang offers the ultimate record of modern, post WW2 American Slang. The 25,000 entries are accompanied by citations that authenticate the words as well as offer examples of usage from popular literature, newspapers, magazines, movies, television shows, musical lyrics, and Internet user groups. Etymology, cultural context, country of origin and the date the word was first used are also provided. In terms of content, the cultural transformations since 1945 are astounding. Television, computers, drugs, music, unpopular wars, youth movements, changing racial sensitivities and attitudes towards sex and sexuality are all substantial factors that have shaped culture and language. This new edition includes over 500 new headwords collected with citations from the last five years, a period of immense change in the English language, as well as revised existing entries with new dating and citations. No term is excluded on the grounds that it might be considered offensive as a racial, ethnic, religious, sexual or any kind of slur. This dictionary contains many entries and citations that will, and should, offend. Rich, scholarly and informative, The Routledge Dictionary of Modern American Slang and Unconventional English is an indispensable resource for language researchers, lexicographers and translators.

So much happens to all of us every day, yet so much is often forgotten. It is easier to remember things when they rhyme; both the momentous moments and the simple ones. Life is not always an adventure. Often it is ordinary occasions and the common place events that bring us the greatest joy. Stop always looking for the next big thing, beacuse more often than not, life is just the next thing. And that next thing is what life is all about. Every rhyme contains a story; some are sincere, some are funny, some are sad, and some are reflective. There is a lesson, a moral, a tale, a smile, or a tear in every single one. They all rhyme for a reason.

Throughout the United States, groups of individuals have been confronting the issues surrounding sexually explicit materials. Many have concurred in their perceptions of what is pornographic, have assessed pornography to be a problem our society must deal with, and have made organized efforts within their communities to stop or restrict the commercial availability of such materials. Citizens for Decency is an examination of two antipornography crusades, one in the Midwest and the other in the Southwest. It examines the evolution and impact of such crusades, the satisfaction derived from participating, and the relevant characteristics of the participants and their opponents. It is the first systematic, comprehensive, and theory-oriented study of antipornography crusades and one of the few studies that analyze movements to resist change. The book begins with the assumption that the term pornography is a value judgment and that the labeling of sexually explicit materials as “pornographic” can be adequately understood only in the wider context of sociological and psychological structures and processes. In approaching the antipornography crusades, Louis A. Zurcher and R. George Kirkpatrick gathered data by observation and document search and by interviews with persons well informed about and central to the crusades. Their examination of the organizations that directed the two movements is particularly extensive, and their comparative analysis of the two organizations allows them to determine which features are the most important, how these characteristics interact, and what their relationship is to the symbolic crusade. Among their important findings, the authors show that antipornography crusaders are people discontent with their status who have mobilized to protect the dominance and prestige of their traditional life styles. The participants in the crusades are shown to differ from their opponents in a number of significant ways. In the final chapters, the authors analyze their findings with reference to social movement theory and offer predictions concerning future symbolic crusades.

This text outlines what sociologists need to know of the nature of communication and of mass culture, while also looking in some empirical detail at the workings of the Hollywood community and the psychology of the star system. It explores trends such as attempts to adapt semiology and psycholinguistics to our understanding of film ‘language’, using them to develop a paradigm for film analysis. The book goes on to offer a guide to comprehension of the relation between cinema and society through detailed analysis of the relation between the German silent cinema and its social context and extensive discussion of popular genres like the western, gangster movie and horror movie. Seeing movies in terms of meaning, as reservoirs of culture which audiences may use for a variety purposes, this book uses a combination of sociological perspective and critical method to present a unique intriguing perspective.
