What is Smart Camera In addition to being able to extract application-specific information from the images that are captured, a machine vision system that is referred to as a smart camera (sensor), intelligent camera (sensor), (smart) vision sensor, intelligent vision sensor, smart optical sensor, intelligent optical sensor, smart visual sensor, or intelligent visual sensor is also capable of generating event descriptions or making decisions that are utilized in an intelligent and automated system. There are many different types of machine vision systems. A smart camera is a vision system that is self-contained and operated independently. It is housed within the casing of an industrial video camera and has an image sensor integrated in. There is the possibility of integrating the vision system and the image sensor into a single piece of hardware that is referred to as an intelligent image sensor or smart image sensor together.
