Social Science Philosophy And Theology In Dialogue

This volume explores the potential of employing a relational paradigm for the purposes of interdisciplinary exchange. Bringing together scholars from the social sciences, philosophy and theology, it seeks to bridge the gap between subject areas by focusing on real phenomena.Although these phenomena are studied by different disciplines, the editors demonstrate that it is also possible to study them from a common relational perspective that connects the different languages, theories and perspectives which characterize each discipline, by going beyond their differences to the core of reality itself. As an experimental collection that highlights the potential that exists for cross-disciplinary work, this volume will appeal to scholars across a range of field concerned with critical realist approaches to research, collaborative work across subjects and the manner in which disciplines can offer one another new insights.

This volume, Applied Social Sciences: Philosophy and Theology, provides the reader with an important set of essays related to the two aforementioned fields of study. Aesthetics plays a key role in contemporary philosophy and several authors examine its various aspects, such as the question of identification of works of art; the concept of “social aesthetics”; the social therapeutic function that art can have; and the relationships among hermeneutics, aesthetics and communication sciences. Other papers deal with ethical issues, such as the role of human values in applied ethics and moral determinations in public life. The meaning and role of postmodernism in philosophy and society is examined at length in various contributions to the volume, and the same is true for phenomenology at large. Even the theoretical seduction and practical failure of Marxism is addressed, while anthropological issues are studied with reference to truth and other key philosophical concepts. John Searle’s theory of intentionality is seen as a factor for creating social institutions, and the real meaning of “globalization” is investigated in another article. Many essays deal directly with theological and religious topics. For instance the alleged “illusion” of religion versus its persistency is analyzed, along with the current relations between Church and civil government in Romania, the presence of different forms of Christianity in the Romanian nation, the dialogue between social theology and anthropological research, and the antinomic nature of the Church. All papers included in the volume are original and open new perspectives on the many issues addressed by the authors. Even the philosophical styles are different: hermeneutics, analytic philosophy, historical approach, postmodernism, communication theory and linguistic approach. Some papers are theoretical and others have a more empirical or historical flavour. There is however an underlying unity because they all purport to provide new ideas to professionals involved in the socio-humanistic field. The information is divided into chapters in order to help readers to form by themselves an image of the issues that are studied. However, the volume is not addressed only to specialists, and is accessible to a wider public interested in an interdisciplinary approach.

The rapid cultural changes which are so characteristic for our time, have had a far reaching effect not only on the universal human research for happiness, well-being and a meaningful existence in our world, but also on the way in which these concepts are understood and misunderstood in contemporary culture. For religious believers their faith determines the ideals of happiness, well-being and meaningfulness which they strive to attain in their lives. But are these ideals timelessly the same for all time and for all people or are they too subject to historical change and cultural variation ? Social scientists examine the way in which these ideals are culturally pluriform and subject to empirical change in religious and cultural communities and traditions. But what do these concepts mean for social scientists ? Do they use them in the same way as religious believers and theologians do ? In December 1992, the Center for Theological Exploration Inc. sponsored its fourth (and final) Consultation on Science and Religion at the University of Aarhus in Denmark. For that occasion a distinguished international group of theologians and social scientists were invited to discuss these issues. Most of the contributions to this volume were originally presented as papers at that consultation.

This book, Applied Social Sciences: Social Work, is a collection of essays specific to the field of social work. The approach is both holistic (assessment of social work, burnout, counselling, history of social work, migration, models of excellence in social work, unemployment, workaholism) and atomistic (child attachment, children’s rights, coping strategies and associated work – family conflict, emotional neglect, monoparental families, physical abuse, positive child disciplining, psychological abuse, rehabilitation of delinquent minors, social inclusion of youth, etc). The types of academic readership it will appeal to include: academic teaching staff, doctors, parents, psychologists, researchers, social workers, students, and teachers in the field of social work, who wish to improve personally and professionally. It may also be useful to all those who interact, one way or another, with the human factor.

Original essays demonstrate that sociology, history, anthropology, and psychology all leave their mark on theology and open new paths to understanding, and that theology in turn provides significant questions and perspectives for the social sciences. By providing archeological data, sociological theory, demographics and economic data, psychological insights, and new methods of historical interpretation, the social sciences can open the way for a more sophisticated understanding of the social nature of human existence. Theology challenges the social sciences through moral and transcendental questions as well as informs the social sciences through its larger and deeper perspectives. The symbiotic nature of this relationship is described in the lead-off essays by John Coleman and Gregory Baum. The rich conversation between theologians and sociologists that follows moves from Von Balthasar’s use of the social sciences and Rahner’s approach to ecumenism to the roles of psychology and neuropsychology in understanding religious events.

Today we hear renewed calls for a dialogue between science and religion: why has the old question of the relations between science and religion now returned to the public domain and what is at stake in this debate? To answer these questions, historian and sociologist of science Yves Gingras retraces the long history of the troubled relationship between science and religion, from the condemnation of Galileo for heresy in 1633 until his rehabilitation by John Paul II in 1992. He reconstructs the process of the gradual separation of science from theology and religion, showing how God and natural theology became marginalized in the scientific field in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In contrast to the dominant trend among historians of science, Gingras argues that science and religion are social institutions that give rise to incompatible ways of knowing, rooted in different methodologies and forms of knowledge, and that there never was, and cannot be, a genuine dialogue between them. Wide-ranging and authoritative, this new book on one of the fundamental questions of Western thought will be of great interest to students and scholars of the history of science and of religion as well as to general readers who are intrigued by the new and much-publicized conversations about the alleged links between science and religion.

Philosophical Theology and East-West Dialogue is a unique philosophical and theological analysis of certain key interactions between Eastern and Western thinkers. The book on the one hand contrasts general traits of Eastern, Buddhist thought and Western, Greek thought. However, in doing so it focuses on influential philosophers and theologians who manifest particular instances of wider issues. The result is a careful examination of basic questions that offers both broad implications and concrete specificity in its approach. The book itself is an instance of East-West dialogue. Independently of each other both authors had previously engaged in serious cross-cultural studies. The Japanese Inagaki had researched Western science and philosophy, then written in Japanese comparative studies of Japanese thought. The North American Jennings had researched Japanese theology. They brought these backgrounds together, dialoguing with each other until the present study emerged. Several creative Japanese thinkers, as well as important Westerners, are taken up. The study follows the lead of many Eastern impulses, but it also critically utilizes Western methods. Contemporary thinking on religious plurality is carefully examined. This new study is a must for those interested in philosophy and theology in general, and East-West interaction in particular.

In recent decades there has been a growing interest and focus on symbiosis and relationality in sciences, philosophy, and theology. The former ‘atomistic’ worldview in which things were examined in their individuality, as if they were somehow isolated and independent, and in which the concept of substance prevailed, is fading away in favor of an all-encompassing and synthetic understanding of reality, in which things are examined in their interconnectedness and in which the concept of relation is highlighted. This volume intends to be a contribution to this new worldview. In this book the relationship between life and togetherness is studied from the points of view of biology, neurology, psychotherapy, anthropology, bioethics, law, business, Greek literature, music, philosophy, and theology. Each chapter is the result of a particular discipline and is introduced by a meaningful quotation that offers a hint to the main thesis advanced by the author. Coming from different nations and universities, the writers of this volume joined the Research Project “The Organism in an Interdisciplinary Context.” Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome has led this project since the year 2005 with the aim of advancing a dialogue between sciences, philosophy and theology. Their converging research has produced a series of seminars and conferences as well as the publication of three books on the organism in an interdisciplinary context, the definition of death, and the relationship between life and organism.
