Whenever two or more objects or entities—be they bubbles, vortices, black holes, magnets, colloidal particles, microorganisms, swimming bacteria, Brownian random walkers, airfoils, turbine blades, electrified drops, magnetized particles, dislocations, cracks, or heterogeneities in an elastic solid—interact in some ambient medium, they make holes in that medium. Such holey regions with interacting entities are called multiply connected. This book describes a novel mathematical framework for solving problems in two-dimensional, multiply connected regions. The framework is built on a central theoretical concept: the prime function, whose significance for the applied sciences, especially for solving problems in multiply connected domains, has been missed until recent work by the author. This monograph is a one-of-a-kind treatise on the prime function associated with multiply connected domains and how to use it in applications. The book contains many results familiar in the simply connected, or single-entity, case that are generalized naturally to any number of entities, in many instances for the first time. Solving Problems in Multiply Connected Domains is aimed at applied and pure mathematicians, engineers, physicists, and other natural scientists; the framework it describes finds application in a diverse array of contexts. The book provides a rich source of project material for undergraduate and graduate courses in the applied sciences and could serve as a complement to standard texts on advanced calculus, potential theory, partial differential equations and complex analysis, and as a supplement to texts on applied mathematical methods in engineering and science.

This book features a collection of recent findings in Applied Real and Complex Analysis that were presented at the 3rd International Conference “Boundary Value Problems, Functional Equations and Applications” (BAF-3), held in Rzeszow, Poland on 20-23 April 2016. The contributions presented here develop a technique related to the scope of the workshop and touching on the fields of differential and functional equations, complex and real analysis, with a special emphasis on topics related to boundary value problems. Further, the papers discuss various applications of the technique, mainly in solid mechanics (crack propagation, conductivity of composite materials), biomechanics (viscoelastic behavior of the periodontal ligament, modeling of swarms) and fluid dynamics (Stokes and Brinkman type flows, Hele-Shaw type flows). The book is addressed to all readers who are interested in the development and application of innovative research results that can help solve theoretical and real-world problems.

This monograph presents new probabilistic representations for classical boundary value problems of mathematical physics and is the first book devoted to the walk on boundary algorithms. Compared to the well-known Wiener and diffusion path integrals, the trajectories of random walks in this publication are simlated on the boundary of the domain as Markov chains generated by the kernels of the boundary integral equations equivalent to the original boundary value problem. The book opens with an introduction for solving the interior and exterior boundary values for the Laplace and heat equations, which is followed by applying this method to all main boundary value problems of the potential and elasticity theories.

Boundary Value Problems is a translation from the Russian of lectures given at Kazan and Rostov Universities, dealing with the theory of boundary value problems for analytic functions. The emphasis of the book is on the solution of singular integral equations with Cauchy and Hilbert kernels. Although the book treats the theory of boundary value problems, emphasis is on linear problems with one unknown function. The definition of the Cauchy type integral, examples, limiting values, behavior, and its principal value are explained. The Riemann boundary value problem is emphasized in considering the theory of boundary value problems of analytic functions. The book then analyzes the application of the Riemann boundary value problem as applied to singular integral equations with Cauchy kernel. A second fundamental boundary value problem of analytic functions is the Hilbert problem with a Hilbert kernel; the application of the Hilbert problem is also evaluated. The use of Sokhotski's formulas for certain integral analysis is explained and equations with logarithmic kernels and kernels with a weak power singularity are solved. The chapters in the book all end with some historical briefs, to give a background of the problem(s) discussed. The book will be very valuable to mathematicians, students, and professors in advanced mathematics and geometrical functions.

The subject of applied complex variables is so fundamental that most of the other topics in advanced engineering mathematics (AEM) depend on it. The present book contains complete coverage of the subject, summarizing the more elementary aspects that you find in most AEM textbooks and delving into the more specialized topics that are less commonplace. The book represents a one-stop reference for complex variables in engineering. The applications of conformal mapping in this book are significantly more extensive than in other AEM textbooks. The treatments of complex integral transforms enable a much larger class of functions that can be transformed, resulting in an expanded use of complex-transform techniques in engineering analysis. The inclusion of the asymptotics of complex integrals enables the analysis of models with irregular singular points. The book, which has more than 300 illustrations, is generous with realistic example problems.

This thesis is concerned with flows through cascades, i.e. periodic arrays of obstacles. Such geometries are relevant to a range of physical scenarios, chiefly the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of turbomachinery flows. Despite the fact that turbomachinery is of paramount importance to a number of industries, many of the underlying mechanisms in cascade flows remain opaque. In order to clarify the function of different physical parameters, the author considers six separate problems. For example, he explores the significance of realistic blade geometries in predicting turbomachinery performance, and the possibility that porous blades can achieve noise reductions. In order to solve these challenging problems, the author deploys and indeed develops techniques from across the spectrum of complex analysis: the Wiener–Hopf method, Riemann–Hilbert problems, and the Schottky–Klein prime function all feature prominently. These sophisticated tools are then used to elucidate the underlying mathematical and physical structures present in cascade flows. The ensuing solutions greatly extend previous works and offer new avenues for future research. The results are not of simply academic value but are also useful for aircraft designers seeking to balance aeroacoustic and aerodynamic effects.

This refereed volume arose from the editors' recognition that physical scientists, engineers, and applied mathematicians are developing, in parallel, solutions to problems of parallelization. The cross-disciplinary field of scientific computation is bringing about better communication between heterogeneous computational groups, as they face this common challenge. This volume is one attempt to provide cross-disciplinary communication. Problem decomposition and the use of domain-based parallelism in computational science and engineering was the subject addressed at a workshop held at the University of Minnesota Supercomputer Institute in April 1994. The authors were subsequently able to address the relationships between their individual applications and independently developed approaches. This book is written for an interdisciplinary audience and concentrates on transferable algorithmic techniques, rather than the scientific results themselves. Cross-disciplinary editing was employed to identify jargon that needed further explanation and to ensure provision of a brief scientific background for each chapter at a tutorial level so that the physical significance of the variables is clear and correspondences between fields are visible.
