Excerpt from Some Account of the Amphibians and Reptiles of British Columbia In the summer of 1928 the writer visited southern British Columbia with Professor J. R. Dymond, Mr. T. B. Kurata and Mr. C. M. Mottley. The party was engaged in a studyof the trout of that region under the Biological Board of Canada, and in collecting natural history material for the Royal Ontario Museum of Zoology. Such time as was available to the writer from other duties was devoted to the search for amphibians and reptiles. Excerpt from British Reptiles and Amphibians This little volume, dealing with the British Reptiles and Amphibians, may well find a place in the Peeps at Nature Series. Britain has few representatives of these two classes of animals, but their fewness in number has enabled the author to deal with each species at some length; and, besides, we have the additional advantage of being able to illustrate all but two of the British species in colour. We are indebted to Miss Scrivener for the capabie way in which she has prepared the drawings from which the coloured plates have been prepared. The reader's attention is par ticularly directed to the series of photographic repro ductions on Plates III., VI., VII., X., and XL, which illustrate admirably the story of the development of the frog. Excerpt from The Amphibians of Western North America: An Account of the Species Known to Inhabit California, Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Sonora, and Lower California Reptiles. In fact they are neither fish, flesh nor fowl. Most amphibians lay their eggs in water, and the young, for a time, breathe by means of gills. After a metamorphosis, during which the gills and other larval characteristics disappear, the young assume the form and structure of the adults and leave the water to spend a greater or less portion of their lives on land. Reptiles never lay their eggs in water, and their young are hatched or born with the form and structure of their parents. The skin of 'our amphibians often is moist or slimy, and is not covered with scales. Many embryological and anatomical differences between amphi bians and reptiles exist but need not be stated here.
