The late Mr. M. G. Ranade has also left valuable records of his views on the same. And latterly M r. R. C. Dutt, by his Economic History of India' and other writings, has placed the Indian people under obligation. I may mention Mr. I). E.wacha, and the Hon: M r. G. K. Go'khale among other Indians who hate thrown light on' economic and fiscal questions by their various public utterances and writings. Still, in my humble opinion, these questions should be more generally studied by our politicians and journalists than is the case at present and their Views should be more largely diffused among the classes that take an interest in public affairs. It may be frankly stated that this idea is generally accepted outside of India. In these pages the writer makes an attempt to present some aspects of British rule in India from the angle of the ruled. I may add that I am fully aware and duly appreciative of the many solid advantages of English rule; and if I have not dwelt on those aspects of Indian administration it is because I have considered it more important just now to point out certain evils and suggest constructive re forms. The policy of repression which characterizes the modern regime is, I believe, doing much harm.
