Some Reflective Prayers

Prayers for Reflection offers an abundant selection of over 250 prayers from some of our best-loved authors. Bringing together words of warmth and contemplation across a variety of subjects and situations, this helpful collection provides a wealth of resources for both personal and group prayer.

The prayer-poems of this collection are spiritual reflections on my engagement with the three readings listed at the top of each reflective prayer. They are intended to invite the reader into a world of engagement with the spirit in the texts. As poems, they are meant to become poets, writing meaning in the engagement of a reader with the words and rhythms and images portrayed.

A lot of people would like to learn to pray all over again. Others are not so sure they ought to pray. They want to know whether prayer will help them and, more than that, whether it will be of any use at all to our world. This book gives an answer-not in the form of glib instructions, but by introducing the reader to the theology of prayer. It refers again and again to the Bible, especially the Psalms. At the same time, it speaks about personal experiences as well. Gerhard Lohfink writes in inviting, easy-to-read language, answering questions such as: "To whom do we pray?" "Does it make any sense to ask for things in prayer?" "What happens in the Eucharistic Prayer?" "What is so special about the Psalms?" "How can I practice Christian meditation?" Chronic pain is so complex with many facets; some of which we are just beginning to understand. Prayer and reflection can help quiet the mind, which may otherwise be over stimulated with pain signals that perpetually cycle without ceasing. It can also help provide the guidance to nurture self esteem and relationships with loved ones. These Reflective Prayers are the result of permitting a gentle reading of the lectionary texts for a given service to resonate in me and emerge as a searching engagement of the word with my spirit in a mood of settled joy.
