Originally published in 1968. The author, a well-known contemporary and friend of folklorist Katharine M. Briggs, collected a tremendous store of folk music material over many years and eventually decided to put some of it on permanent record. This book comprises a cross-section of rescued melodies dating back to medieval days and up to the Victorian early ballads. It describes individual folk singers in Somerset in great detail as personal accounts and documents their lyrics and their tunes, which are all together at the end of the volume.

One evening as he made his way to a local church social in the village hall during the 1950s, a loud crack shook the ground and the night sky turned to an orange glow, lighting the way for him. Shrugging his shoulders, the author made his way through the village, and in the distance he heard an explosion as a jet aircraft hit the ground. It was a common enough occurrence in the village of Ilton; RAF Merryfield was always losing aircraft and on a regular basis. Fifty years later, and in an effort to put his indifference right, the author began to investigate air crashes in and around Somerset. What he discovered appalled him at the sheer scale of it all. He now shares his findings of Somerset air crashes since 1945 with you.

There was also frequent contact with, at least, the neighbouring tribes of the Bechuana, the Zulu, the Sotho, the Qwa Qwa and the Gariep. Indeed, many locally crafted items found their way North to the ancient city-state of Great Zimbabwe, some even making it as far afield as India and Arabia. In the days long before Radio, TV and the Internet, many a traditional story would have been shared around a blazing campfire and it is with this mix of Indian, Arabian and inter-tribal African cultures that stories, or fragments of stories, would have been swapped with the peoples they met.
