Tesfaye Gabbiso, prominent Ethiopian soloist, began composing song texts and tunes as a young lad in the early 1970s during a period of social and political upheaval in Ethiopia. This national ferment strengthened a creative surge among a generation of youth as the Ethiopian revolution (1974–91) was taking hold. An explosion of indigenous spiritual songs was one result. The indigenous song style was in contrast to the imported and translated European hymnody that had earlier been sung in Ethiopia's evangelical churches. Because of his testimony, both in life and song, Tesfaye was imprisoned for seven years during the revolution, during which time he continued to compose and sing. Thus, his songs reflect suffering, endurance, and hope in the "Babylons, Meantime, and Zions" of life experience. The human voice in song, rooted in the flow of the missio Dei, is perhaps the greatest testimony that may be lived out, whether in a prison cell or in the larger complex world. A special feature of this book is the inclusion of 104 of Tesfaye's songs (Cassettes 1–7) in English translation. This study is valuable as a cross-cultural textbook, offers rich lyrics, and embodies a challenge to Christian commitment in the arts.

This open access book presents up-to-date analyses of community-based approaches to sustainable resource management of SEPLS (socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes) in areas where a harmonious relationship between the natural environment and the people who inhabit it is essential to ensure community and environmental well-being as well as to build resilience in the ecosystems that support this well-being. Understanding SEPLS and the forces of change that can weaken their resilience requires the integration of knowledge across a wide range of academic disciplines as well as from indigenous knowledge and experience. Moreover, given the wide variation in the socio-ecological makeup of SEPLS around the globe, as well as in their political and economic contexts, individual communities will be at the forefront of developing the measures appropriate for their unique circumstances. This in turn requires robust communication systems and broad participatory approaches. Sustainability science (SuS) research is highly integrated, participatory and solutions driven, and as such is well suited to the study of SEPLS. Through case studies, literature reviews and SuS analyses, the book explores various approaches to stakeholder participation, policy development and appropriate action for the future of SEPLS. It provides communities, researchers and decision-makers at various levels with new tools and strategies for exploring scenarios and creating future visions for sustainable societies.

"This book reveals the previously hidden story of the censorship of popular music in Britain, bringing together a wealth of material for the first time as well as including a great deal of original material. The censorship of popular music is detailed from the point of production in record companies, through retail outlets, attempts to prosecute records (and covers) in radio and television bans and in banned concerts and raves. Numerous cases are presented and debated. The book also includes a section on organised censors such as moralist pressure groups and religious sects and the more intermittent censors - the press and MPs." "A number of common themes - including the desire to protect children, the use of aesthetic critiques, the importance of locality to censorship and the idea of the business manipulating its audience - recur throughout the book and are brought together in the conclusion." "The book will be of interest to those who seek to understand the nature of British society and those concerned with censorship in all its myriad forms."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "One important impediment to improved policies and investments for poor and rural people in Africa has been a lack of data on actual conditions. To begin to help fill this data gap, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) worked closely with Ethiopia’s Central Statistical Agency to produce the Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economy. This Atlas gives a comprehensive view of rural Ethiopia in the areas of production, infrastructure, markets, natural resources, agroclimate, social indicators, institutions, and demographics. By giving a full and multilayered picture of conditions in rural Ethiopia, these maps should facilitate the design of interventions that can contribute to a path of sustained growth for the Ethiopian economy. They should also help policymakers and development practitioners target interventions to the people and communities who need them most." -- from Foreword by Joachim von Braun
