This book attempts to locate South Asian history within broader supra-regional and world contexts, as well as within the larger historical debates and theories that analyse the shape of the modern world. It comprises seventeen studies by historians, sociologists, economists, and politicalscientists which examine developments within the subcontinent in the global context of capitalism. Contributions to this volume include an essay each by Immanuel Wallerstein and David Washbrook, two by C.A. Bayly, and one each by younger scholars such as Sugata Bose, Ayesha Jalal, Gyan Prakash, and Jayati Ghosh.

Precarious Asia assesses the role of global and domestic factors in shaping precarious work and its outcomes in Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia as they represent a range of Asian political democracies and capitalist economies: Japan and South Korea are now developed and mature economies, while Indonesia remains a lower-middle income country. With their established backgrounds in Asian studies, comparative political economy, social stratification and inequality, and the sociology of work, the authors yield compelling insights into the extent and consequences of precarious work, examining the dynamics underlying its rise. By linking macrostructural policies to both the mesostructure of labor relations and the microstructure of outcomes experienced by individual workers, they reveal the interplay of forces that generate precarious work, and in doing so, synthesize historical and institutional analyses with the political economy of capitalism and class relations. This book reveals how precarious work ultimately contributes to increasingly high levels of inequality and condemns segments of the population to chronic poverty and many more to livelihood and income vulnerability.

Characterizations of China and India as premodern backwaters, he explains, were themselves the historical result of new notions of political economy adopted by Chinese and Indian nationalists, who discovered that these abstract ideas corresponded to concrete social changes in their local surroundings. Southeast Asia, until the Asian economic crisis of 1997-2000, was a high economic growth area. However, despite the neo-liberal and globalizing logic of capitalism, local conditions and cultures determine that capitalism will spread in ways not entirely consonant with its Western origins. Capitalism is not a free-floating entity -- it is a socially embodied phenomenon that needs to function in various cultural contexts. Consequently, the tension between the universal status that some claim capitalism now occupies in the post-Cold War world and the particularities of the local cultures it enters should be of great concern.

This volume presents a comparative and comprehensive discussion of corporate economies in South Asia today. It approaches the theme from a socio-historical perspective that examines corporate economies in relation to the state, state formation, globalization and economic reforms and the nature of corporate ownership. It also looks at some of South Asia's well-known but inadequately understood institutions such as caste, thus questioning some major tenets of the conventional wisdom that shape our thinking about contemporary Asia.
