Excerpt from A List of the Publications of the United States National Museum: 1875-1900, Including the Annual Reports, Proceedings, Bulletins, Special Bulletins, and Circulars; With Index to Titles The purpose of this bulletin is to present a list, with index to titles, of the publications of the U. S. National Museum, which consist of an annual Report, an annual volume of Proceedings, Bulletins, Special Bulletins, and Circulars. The Report constitutes the second volume of the Smithsonian Report, and the first one thus issued is for the year 1884. A certain number of these volumes is assigned to the Museum for distribution to libraries, to correspondents, and to contributors to the collections, while a considerable part of the edition is distributed by members of Congress. The special papers in these volumes, for the most part describing ethnological collections in the National Museum, are furnished free to those interested. The series of Proceedings of the National Museum began in 1878, and 23 volumes, containing 1,240 separate papers, have been published. These papers, which are technical, describe, or are based wholly or in part upon, material in the Museum. The volumes are sent only to libraries, while the separate papers are furnished without charge to specialists and others engaged in scientific work. The first number of the Bulletin was issued in 1875. Of the latest in the series, No. 50 (The Birds of North and Middle America), only the first volume, relating to the Fringillidae, has been issued. The bulletins are intended principally for libraries, but are also given to known specialists working on the groups to which they relate. Special Bulletins, in quarto, have been issued at irregular intervals, but this form has been used only where a size larger than octavo was deemed especially desirable. The last one published (No. IV) is the first volume of a monograph of the American Hydroids, and relates to the group Plumularidae. The primary object of the issuance of the series of Circulars was to bring to immediate notice urgent wants of the Museum, or to promulgate special information with the least possible delay. The first circular was published in 1881, and at the time when the present list was sent to the Printing Office this series contained fifty numbers. None of the above-mentioned publications are sold by the Museum, but when the Museum can not supply them, persons desiring to purchase are advised to write to the Superintendent of Documents, Union Building, Washington, D. C. Occasionally the Museum exchanges its publications for desirable specimens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This volume presents the life work of the late Ruth Johnston-Feller, one of the nation's leading color scientists. It combines an overview of basic theoretical concepts with detailed, hands-on guidance for the professional conservator and conservation scientist. The author focuses on the application of color science to the solution of practical problems, providing a comprehensive discussion of the nondestructive spectrophotometric tools and techniques used to understand the color and appearance of materials during the technical examination of works of art. The book, which features numerous examples of reference reflectance spectra, can help prevent misinterpretation of color measurements and the erroneous conclusions that might result. Topics include spectrophotometry, colorimetry, colorant mixtures, analytical techniques, reflection, fluorescence, and the effects of extenders, fillers, and inerts.

Waipio Valley: A Polynesian Journey from Eden to Eden recounts the remarkable migrations of the Polynesians across a third of the circumference of the earth. Their amazing journey began from Kalana i Hauola, the biblical Garden of Eden located along the shore of the Persian Gulf, extended to the Indus River Valley of ancient Vedic India, to Egypt where some ancestors of the Polynesians were on the Israelite Exodus, through Island Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Ocean. They voyaged thousands of miles in double-hull canoes constructed from hollowed-out logs, built with Stone Age tools and navigated by the stars of the night sky. The Polynesians resided on numerous tropical islands before reaching Waipio Valley, the last Polynesian Garden of Eden. Due to their isolation on the islands of the Pacific Ocean, Polynesian religious and cultural beliefs have preserved elements from mankinds past nearer the beginning of human history. Polynesian mythology includes genealogical records of their divine ancestors that extends back to Kahiki, their mystical land of creation and ancient divine homeland created by the gods, epic tales of gods and heroes that preserved records of their ancient voyages, oral chants such as the Hawaiian Kumulipo contain evolutionary creation theories that reflect modern scientific thought, and the belief in a Supreme Creator God.

Mammalogy is the study of mammals from the diverse biological viewpoints of structure, function, evolutionary history, behavior, ecology, classification, and economics. Thoroughly updated, the Sixth Edition of Mammalogy explains and clarifies the subject as a unified whole. The text begins by defining mammals and summarizing their origins. It moves on to discuss the orders and families of mammals with comprehensive coverage on the fossil history, current distribution, morphological characteristics, and basic behavior and ecology of each family of mammals. The third part of the text progresses to discuss special topics such as mammalian echolocation, physiology, behavior, ecology, and zoogeography. The text concludes with two additional chapters, previously available online, that cover mammalian domestication and mammalian disease and zoonoses.
