St. John the Evangelist (6 A.D. - 99 A.D.) was the youngest of the Twelve Disciples. At the Last Supper, he was the one who was permitted to lay his head on Jesus' chest, and he was the only disciple who accompanied Jesus to the Cross at Calvary. As an Apostle he performed miracles, wrote the Gospel of John, three epistle letters, and the Apocalypse (also known as the Revelation of John or the Book of Revelations.) St. John the Evangelist is one of the prominent saints in all of Christendom. In the Catholic Church he is the patron saint of writers, booksellers, art dealers, printers, and friendships. St. John Paul II (1920-2005) Born Karol Wojtyla, he was born in a small town just outside Krakow, Poland. He began attending the seminary in secret in 1942 during the Nazi occupation of Poland, and was ordained in 1946. Elected to the papacy in 1978, he took the name John Paul II and became one of the longest-serving popes in the Church's history. He was also one of the most-travelled popes of all time, and as co-patron of World Youth Day he breathed new life into his efforts of The New Evangelization. St. John Paul II was also responsible for a series of catechetical instructions that resulted in the Theology of the Body, the Jubilee Year of 2000, and creation of the John Paul II Pontifical Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences.
