Statistical Methods For The Analysis Of Lake Water Quality Trends

Data on water quality and other environmental issues are being collected at an ever-increasing rate. In the past, however, the techniques used by scientists to interpret this data have not progressed as quickly. This is a book of modern statistical methods for analysis of practical problems in water quality and water resources. The last fifteen years have seen major advances in the fields of exploratory data analysis (EDA) and robust statistical methods. The 'real-life' characteristics of environmental data tend to drive analysis towards the use of these methods. These advances are presented in a practical and relevant format. This book details the experiences gained by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) in a Mediterranean watershed – the Catalan River Basin District – following the launch of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) in the year 2000. Groundwater and coastal water experts present 13 chapters defining tools for water-status assessment specially adapted to Mediterranean conditions. This volume contains selected papers from the ``Workshop on the Statistical Aspects of Water Quality Monitoring'', held on October 7-10 1985, at the National Water Research Institute in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The prime objective of the Workshop was to generate interaction between the statistical community and scientists working in the area of Water Quality Monitoring. To this end, topics covered in this Workshop fall into two categories: (1) Methods Development, and (2) the Imaginative Application of Existing Methodologies. Subjects covered include: Time Series, Estimation of Loading, Clustering, Model Development, Censoring Data Analysis, Quality Control and Data Acquisition. In the area of environmental sciences, statistical applications are still in their infancy, with few attempts to systematically develop techniques dealing with environmental issues. The publication of this book is one step towards identifying appropriate statistical techniques and diagnosing problems in Water Quality Monitoring which require new statistical methodologies. The papers presented in this volume represent international expertise, consolidating detailed information on both conventional and new methods.

This book contains the proceedings of a workshop, 'Statistical Methods for the Assess ment of Point Source Pollution', held September 12-14, 1988, at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The objectives of the workshop were to: a) advance the art, science, and application of statistical methods to current water quality issues by stimulating discussions and disseminating ideas and information. The emphasis was on statistical problems associated with monitor ing and controlling discharges from industries and municipalities and assessing the impact of these discharges on receiving water quality, b) provide a forum for managers, engineers, scientists, and statisticians to present and discuss techniques for evaluating water quality data and planning monitoring activities, c) provide a published state-of-the art summary of the application of statistical methods for the assessment of point source discharges and their impact on water qUality. The papers contained in this volume cover a number of topics that are of concern not only for monitoring and assessing point source pollution but also for other environmental problems.
