Una trattazione sistematica e completa della storiografia romana, ovvero della storiografia in lingua latina e in lingua greca legata alla storia di Roma dalla sua nascita alla fine del III secolo a.C. sino al VI secolo d.C. Il manuale, organizzato in capitoli che corrispondono a determinati generi storiografici o indirizzi politico-culturali, è uno strumento di grande efficacia didattica, ma non rinuncia ad avanzare ipotesi originali su generi e autori. La storiografia romana risulta da queste pagine non un'appendice della storiografia greca ma un'importante tradizione con caratteristiche proprie e un'evoluzione originale (si pensi al suo incontro col cristianesimo) che ne fanno una tappa fondamentale della storia del pensiero occidentale.
