I there fore did not consider the act of enlisting a contradiction to my earlier predilection. In relation to my experience and observations during three years and five months, which is the period of time I gave my country in fulfilment of my enlistment agree ment, this little book I now present to my friends will briefly tell in part. Excerpt from The Southern War Poetry of the Civil War In the assembling of material so widely scattered and so long unsought either by students or by collectors, it has been necessary for me to depend in some measure on the efforts of others who have been most generous with their help and assistance. I desire to record my gratitude especially to my Father and my Mother, without whose unfailing sympathy and co-operation this work could not have been done: and to Mrs. C. Francis Osborne of Philadelphia, Miss Sallie Shepherd of Norfolk, Virginia, and Miss Florence D. Johnston of Philadelphia, for books and individual poems. For their courtesy in allowing me free access to the collections committed to their charge I must acknowledge further indebtedness to Mr. Wallace H. Cathcart, Vice-President and Director of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, whose splendid collection of Civil War items contains many rare and important imprints and broadsides: and to Mr. Bunford Samuel, of the Ridgway Branch of the Library Company of Philadelphia, to whose private collection I am indebted for several poems which I have not found elsewhere. Particularly to Dr. Arthur Hobson Quinn of the University of Pennsylvania, under whose direction this thesis was written, I wish to acknowledge my obligation and to express my sincere appreciation for his guidance and advice. Excerpt from My Lady of the South: A Story of the Civil War Something burned my shoulder like a sudden spurt of flame; I felt sick from the shock, and clung desperately to the breech to keep from falling; I saw faces here and there amid the brown whirls of smoke, strange, unknown repulsive faces, rendered hideous from the strain of con fliet; my gun toppled over, one wheel smashed into splin ters; I saw Wyatt turn and run for the rear, and Park hurst flung backward as though shot from a catapuAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Southerners: A Story of the Civil War There is in my mind a picture of the days of Sixty-one - Sixty-five. I close my eyes, and out of the mists of the past there rises before me an old white house on a hill. It is springtime. A child is playing in the grass under the trees. A woman watches at the gate. And a soldier comes home from the wars. A soldier, sick, worn, weary; a haggard, broken wreck of the brave young man who left all at his country's first appeal and looked not back so long as he had strength to stand. His fighting days are over. And the woman meets him at the gate - They come down the long walk under the trees toward the little lad, the woman proudly supporting the man's faltering steps. The child, who has grown to step and speech while the man has been absent, shrinks away from the tired figure in the dusty faded Army blue, who stretches out trembling hands to him with words of affectionate appeal. The little boy does not recognize the stranger until he is caught up against that brave heart and hears the words, "My son, my son!" I close my eyes and see once more my Father, as I saw him on that day nearly forty years ago. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Echoes From the Battlefield or Southern Life During the War After a lapse of many years a retrospective mood possessed my thoughts, and for abrief period I was no longer a man but a boy full of life, and was once more playing with other children on the grounds of the old homestead, enjoying myself as only a healthy lad can; and while thus musing every scene in the grand but cruel panorama of war passed rapidly before my vision and tempted me so strongly that I could not resist the temptation to write and leave to my only child a true record of events as they occurred during that stormy period of our civil war. This is the only apology I can offer for this faulty little publication; but since it is finished, I now offer it to all who are willing to pass its imperfections by; and hope that some of its readers who were so fortunate as to escape the realities of war may by its perusal glean something of interest. And may some of the characters in it be found worthy of emulation. I have added some very beautiful poems by the best of authors, which will be found ex. Alice Fahs explores a little-known and fascinating side of the Civil War - the outpouring of popular literature inspired by the conflict. From 1861 to 1865, authors and publishers in both the North and the South produced a remarkable variety of war-related compositions, including poems, songs, children's stories, romances, novels, histories, and even humorous pieces. Fahs mines these rich but long-neglected resources to recover the diversity of the war's political and social meanings. Instead of narrowly portraying the Civil War as a clash between two great, white armies, popular literature offered a wide range of representations through which to consider the conflict, as Fahs demonstrates. Works that explored the war's devastating impact on white women's lives, for example, proclaimed the importance of their experiences on the home front, while popular writings that celebrated black manhood and heroism in the wake of emancipation helped readers begin to imagine new roles for blacks in American life. By providing subjects and characters with which a broad spectrum of people could identify, popular literature invited ordinary Americans to envision themselves as active participants in the war and helped shape new modes of imagining the relationships of diverse individuals to the nation.
