However, as he tries to track down Jekyll and the mysterious Mr. Hyde, he learns that the truth is much more disturbing than his originally thought. An early example of “split personalities” and doppelgängers in literature, the story of Jekyll and Hyde has permeated pop culture since it was originally published in 1886. Author Robert Louis Stevenson purportedly wrote the tale within a matter of days after coming up with the beginning of the story in a dream.
