"The plot is engaging...Tissot tells a moving story..." Christian Woodard, book reviewer, Adirondack Daily Enterprise, NY In this novel of mystery, fun and sorrow, a man struggles to make a fresh start in life. Tuck Rising, an injured ski champion, returns to his hometown to find work as a Great Camp caretaker. With his new bride Britt Freier and his daughter Tibetta, he moves into a rustic home in the village of Meltmor, planning to stay only until he recovers from his injury and can return to racing. Like walking on thin ice, every step he takes brings him closer to peril. The story romps through the high jinks and hard times of a northern village and shines a light on the little known lives of caretakers. In a twist of magic realism, Pitt and his pet Rat's prophesies remind us that the way forward is not always clear. Life in the North brings Tuck far more obstacles than flags on a race course. Will Tuck overcome the challenges? Hold on to his family? Make his way back to the race course? Will misinformation and cover-ups obstruct his path to success? This book is a revision of Tibetta's World; High Jinks and Hard Times in the North Country. What readers are saying. "... vivid imagination along with knowledge of our beloved Adirondacks and small town people..." - Win, France "... a wonderful novel ... I think everyone should read it from 10 to 90. - Diana, New York "...mystery, love, murder, humor and philosophy all rolled into one..." - Liz, New York

This book, first published in 1932, demonstrates how the control of certain ‘-isms’ has for long moulded the interpretation of Indian belief and ritual by Western writers particularly. In every chapter there is some new coordination, often iconoclastic of then-accepted theory, whilst the new wealth of customs carefully recorded is astonishing. Long disputed problems such as that of the Maratha ‘devak’, or that of the ceremonial sowing of seedlings known to Western scholars as the ‘gardens of Adonis’, have at last been settled through careful research.

It was the year of the Lord 1685. With only the clothes they were dressed in, their Bibles hidden in loaves of hollowed bread, they fled before the French Catholic authorities. Die or be Catholic! were shouted by the heartless dragonnades with emphasis on the die. And when the second word followed, the Protestant Huguenot victims were already struckdying, brutally slaughtered in the name of Catholic Christianity! This terror swept through Paris, continued through the rest of France, after King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes proclaimed by his grandfather, King Henry the Great of France. This bloody highway in the name of Christianity took thousands of Huguenots lives and hundreds of thousands fled their country of birth to find refuge in America, other parts of Europe, and also South Africa. In South Africa, they started anew, with their God (of Israel) and their Bibles, and the home and the freedom to serve their God they so longed for and found would become a nightmare again. With their blood, they paid for freedom, twice; and today they are still dying, slaughtered by the criminal elements that rule in South Africa, unfortunately, in the entire Africa.

In 1935 Sidney Kingsley's play about streetwise urban kids, Dead End, opened on Broadway featuring 14 adolescent actors. For two years on Broadway and then on tour, Kingsley's play delivered its social commentary contrasting affluent neighborhoods and tenement slums on New York City's East River. The film industry picked up the story and in 1937 released Dead End which spawned 23 more years of films and serials featuring the Dead End Kids and their offshoots, Little Tough Guys, East Side Kids and the Bowery Boys. This chronicle follows the street kids through the many assorted incarnations, shifting casts and studios. First the reader is introduced to how the original play and film came about. A cast list and analysis of each production follows. For the major players, the author provides a biography and filmography, and several of these entries include a tribute from a friend or family member. Brief biographical profiles are given for other actors. Sketches of the "Dead End" revivals of 1978 and 2005 follow.
